In the North, gold dominates the wedding
jewelry market but a range of customers are
now looking to pay top prices for what the
trade calls colored pieces. 10% to 15% of
Tanishq and Zoya's sales come from
precious gems. The Indian customers are
experimenting much more with jewelry.
In the April-August 2019, colored
gemstone imports went up by 150%.

Council, imports of rough gemstones grew from
$106 million from 2008-09 to $906 million in
2017-18. These imports include precious and
semi-precious gemstones.
Men are finding new ways of
expressing themselves and are
not afraid to experiment with
jewelry. Sales of jewelry for men
have risen by 72% this
season(2018-2019).
More recently hand unfinished looks
such as hammered effects, raw
uncut stones are becoming very
popular with artisan products back in
vogue.”

formal occasion, cufflinks still have an
important role to play, alongside tie and
lapel pins”.

significant meaning for the older men.
• Through the ages, most men preferred platinum when it came to their jewellery. But today, young men
are not only looking at bands in platinum, but are also taking to platinum chains, and bracelets.
