What is a Liner?

• A casing string is run from TD all the

way to the wellhead
• The liner is run into the well from TD to
the last casing point using running tools
and drill pipe which is retrieved from the
well once the liner is in place
• Multiple liners can be run in a well for
different applications – drilling liners,
completion liners and others
• The liner hanger system hangs the liner
from the previous casing string or liner
• Liners can be cemented or un-
cemented

Liner Hanger Systems – Why Run a Liner?

Advantages of Using a Liner Risks of Using a Liner

• Saves casing and cementing • Higher risk than traditional
costs and takes less rig time casing run due to complexity
• Saves wellhead slots in of installation
subsea applications • Drilling hydraulics on next
• In many cases, liner worked section due to greater
to TD by rotating, annular area above liner
reciprocating, reaming and which will require more
circulation horsepower to lift cuttings
• Equipment not always readily
• Where possible, reciprocating available when needed for
during conditioning and unplanned events
rotating during the cement • Well and mud must be
job improves zone isolation prepared properly
• Provides additional annular
barrier relative to long-string
(casing to surface)
