There are set fishing rules that apply every time

Schlumberger Private
• Get as much information as possible concerning the well
• BHA information (lengths, OD, ID, Radioactive sources, fishing
neck)
• Casing (Depth,
(Depth OD,
OD ID,
ID Weight)
• Open Hole (Size, depth)
• Well trajectory (surveys)
• Tight spots / Washout (Caliper log)
• Sketches are very important - mean the success or failure of a job
• Not corrected by wireline measurement
10
• Two people should keep figures independent and compare
periodically
STUCK PIPE
Fishing Tools
• Every well will dictate, there is no one tool to cure all
• Run fishing assembly at moderate speed
• Could cause lost circulation
• Might hit a tight place and become stuck

Schlumberger Private
• When POOH don’t create a swabbing action
• When washing over or washing down
• Be sure if you are getting enough cuttings out to offset the
amount you are washing. If you are not, then it is possible to
build a bridge above the tools and become stuck

11

STUCK PIPE
Methods of Fishing Stuck Pipe
1. Back off
Unscrew the pipe at a selective threaded joint above the stuck
point using an explosive run on wireline inside the pipe.
• Back-off is needed if the fishing plan requires screwing a

Schlumberger Private
tool into the fish
• Drill pipe, collars and other drilling tools generally have
large coarse threads.
• Back-off tubing is difficult because threads are too fine.
• String shot is used to loosen the threads and sometimes it is
sufficient to knock the pipe free
free.

12

STUCK PIPE
Methods of Fishing Stuck Pipe
2. Chemical Cutters
Uses a propellant and chemical such as Halogen
Fluoride.
Fluoride
• More economical than the back off because it is

Schlumberger Private
faster!
• Safe for rig personnel since no torque of the pipe
is necessary.
• No flare or burn or swelling of the cut pipe so it
does not need be dressed before catching it on
the outside with an overshot or inside with a
spear.
• Requires 100 ft of clean fluid above tool when fish
13 cutt is
i made.

3. Chemical Cutter Use
• Involves the conduit cables and tubing used to power down hole
electric submersible pumps
pumps.Becomes
Becomes stuck when deposits of
sand, corrosion or small particles stick the pump to the
casing. The submersible pump have relatively large diameters

Schlumberger Private
with little clearance with the casing
• Important that the tubing not pulled on two. If parted it will fall
and pack down eliminating cut above stuck point.
• Chemical cut provides a sharp edge on the tubing which will be
used to cut the conduit.
• After tubingg is cut should be ppulled 18-24” leavingg a ggapp at the
cut with the cable run taut between.

• Good when the well is to be abandoned

Schlumberger Private
or when the cost does not allow for use

• May cause damage to casing or an
adjacent string if the pipe is touching it
when the cut is made.

18

STUCK PIPE
Methods of Fishing Stuck Pipe
4. Mechanical Cut
Cut the pipe internally or externally using a tool equipped with a set
of knives and run on a small diameter work string.
• Not used very often since it is more economical to use wireline

Schlumberger Private
tools than to run a string
• Should only be used if other options are definitely not available
p
Depending g on the condition of the topp of the cut pipe
p p then a fishingg
tool is selected.

Impression Block
• Provides impression of the top of the
fish and obstruction.
• Low-cost alternative to down-hole
camera.

Schlumberger Private
• Side mounted circulation ports
allowing full impression.
• Replaceable lead insert to minimize
redress cost.

21

STUCK PIPE
Internal Mechanical Pipe Cutter
• Anchor by slowly rotating to the right whilst
lowering the string.
• The Wiper blocks resist rotation.
• This in turn will move the slips into the

Schlumberger Private
engage position,
position gently go down with draw
draw-
works line while rotating at 10-20RPM and
watching the torque.
• Free rotation with little or no reverse torque
indicates that the cut is complete.

STUCK PIPE
External Catch: Overshot
OVERSHOT 150 series
• Probably used more than any other fishing tool,
• Is used for catching the outside diameter of a tubular fish,
• Th guide
The id directs
di the

i theh overshot
h
• The grapple expands to allow the fish to pass into it and is
then halted by the pin of the top sub,

Schlumberger Private
• The fish now is pproperly
p y located in the Overshot and
thereafter, when upward pull is exerted, the grapple is
contracted by the tapers of the bowl and hold is secure.
• The “A” packer seals off the outside of the fish allowing
you to circulate down through the fish as long as the
internal diameter of the fish is not blocked.
• When releasing, the sharp downwards bump places the
largest portion of the bowl tapers opposite the grapple and
breaks the hold
• Right hand-rotation expands the grapple and by
maintaining right-hand rotation the overshot may be
withdrawn from the fish
24

STUCK PIPE
External Catch: Overshot
OVERSHOT 70 series
i
• This short catch overshot releases in the same way
as the 150 series overshot by firstly sharply
bumping downward and then turning with right
hand rotation.

Schlumberger Private
• The Short
S catch overshot (series
( 70)) allows you to
catch the outside diameter of a tubular fish which
has a SHORT FISHNECK,, for example p a DP tool jjoint

25

• Bump down; then simultaneously rotate to the right and slowly
elevate the fishing string until the overshot is clear of the fish.

26

STUCK PIPE
Internal Catch tools: Spear
• Are used for catching the internal
diameter of a tubular fish (Drill pipe,
tubing and casing)

Schlumberger Private
• There are a several types
yp of spear,
p , two
standard are illustrated here:
• Shoulder type mandrel
• Flush type mandrel

• Should be ran with bumper sub to

facilitate the release

27

STUCK PIPE
Spear - Operation

• To engage
1 Lower the fishing string slowly until the spear has entered the

fish to the desired depth.
2. Rotate to the left and then pull by elevating the fishing string

Schlumberger Private
• To release
1. Bump p down the full weight

• Is onlyy used as a last resort.
• Made of hardened steel like the die collar.
• Run with safety joint to be able to

Schlumberger Private
disconnect the fishing string

29

STUCK PIPE
External Catch: Die Collar or Box tap
• Is used for fishing the outside of tubular at the
last attempt to latch onto a fish, when
everything fails.
fails
• When the Die collar is engaged onto the fish it
is very difficult to release because of the tool

Schlumberger Private
design
• Used when the outer diameter of the fish is
not known.
• When the die collar engages it cuts thread on
the outside diameter of the fish and does not
disconnect easily. It is recommended to run a
safetyy jjoint in order to disconnect drill string.

STUCK PIPE
Loose Junk
• Tools or equipment accidentally
left in hole
• Broken off in the hole or
accidentally dropped

Schlumberger Private
• Use Impression blocks – if it is
unknown what the fish is or
how it is ppositioned in the hole.
This will aid in visualization of
how the problem may be solved
to recover the fish.

Loose Junk recovery
1. Magnets
• Permanent Magnets
• Have

h any fill
covering the junk maybe washed away

Schlumberger Private
• Electromagnets
• Run on a conductor line
• Can make quicker trips and have increased lifting power, they
cannot reach the fish if it is covered with debris.
Magnets will only pick up ferrous metal and cannot recover brass,
aluminum carbide and stainless steel

• Will circulate out fill and cut core in the formation
• Catchers break core off and retrieve it along with any junk in
the bottom of the hole

Schlumberger Private
• If the catchers snags on the junk and remains stationary the
finger will break off leaving additional junk in the hole

34

STUCK PIPE
Loose Junk
33. Reverse Circulation Basket
• Used for recovering junk at the bottom of
the hole
• At the bottom of the body inside is a finger
basket.

Schlumberger Private
• Allows
All ddebris

• Normal circulation can be used,
• When you are ready to fish a ball is
dropped and a sleeve is moved for
change the flow.

35

STUCK PIPE
Loose Junk
4. Junk Sub or Boot Basket
• Good for picking up relatively small junk such
as steel cuttings
cuttings, carbide inserts bit teeth and
ball bearings
• Run directly above a bit or junk mill

Schlumberger Private
• Can be run in tandem 2 or 3 above each if
necessary
• Will only work with circulation running down
the string and up through the annulus
• Junk basket collects loose junk in the basket
due to reduced annular velocity at the junk
basket opening.
