• A jar is a slide hammer

Drilling Jar
• Mechanical and Hydraulic jars are very similar, the difference is the release mechanism

• Sledgehammer™ jar is a hydraulic up-mechanical down jar (hydromechanical)

• Jars Can be run in either compression or tension

• Jar Settings (Uplatch, downlatch & time delay values) should be specified on the Jar
travelling sheet.

• To Jar UP:
1. Increase overpull above the string weight in small equal increments (5,000 lbs),

2. wait after each increase to observe whether the jar latch releases (a small drop in load)
and then fires after a 10 to 90 second delay.
To Jar again:
Drilling Jar
• Re-cock the jar in the latch by slacking off until the jar begins to take weight (more than
5,000 lbs). Do not slack off more than the downlatch release setting.

To Jar Down:
• Set down enough string weight on the jar to unlatch. It will fire immediately

• To jar down again, re-cock by picking up until the jar begins to take an overpull (greater
than 5,000 lbs) but less than the up release latch setting.

Maximizing Jarring Efficiency

1. Place the jar at least 30 feet (10m) above stabilizers or roller reamers or other
components larger in diameter than the jar itself.

2. Place the jar close to and above the likeliest sticking point on the BHA.

3. Make up a minimum of three collars or the equivalent in joints of heavyweight drillpipe

directly above the jar. Ideally, if collars are below the jar, collars should be above the
jar.

4. An Intensifier can increase jar impact by reducing friction and the dampening effect of
the drillstring above the jar.
