Rod Reversal

The document provides instructions for a slide show presentation, including printing and distributing certain slides, viewing the slide show, and grading and processing tests after the presentation. It specifies printing slides 2-19 and 20 as note pages or slides, viewing the slide show, and grading tests by multiplying the number correct by 10 to calculate a percentage to write on the test and send for processing.

  • Initial Instructions: Provides procedural steps for printing and distributing slides, and instructions for test grading.
  • Rod Reversal Overview: Presents the introduction to rod reversal including diagrams and visual aids to facilitate understanding.
  • Technical Explanation of Rod Reversal: Comprehensive text explaining the technical intricacies of rod reversal, its implications, and preventive measures.

1. Print slides 2-19 as note pages and distribute.

2. Print slide 20 as a slide and distribute.

3. Print slide 21 as a slide but do not distribute.

4. Click on Slide Show, view slide show to start the show.

5. Hit escape to end show.

6. After tests are taken, grade them and multiply the number
correct by 10 to get a percentage. Write the percentage on the test
and send them to your district training record keeper for processing.

Rod Reversal
Percentage: 1. Rod reversal is not a desired condition as it can lead to failed components.

2. As the load on the piston rod reverses from compression to tension, the crosshead pin
changes positions in the bushing therefore allowing proper lubrication on both sides of the
pin.

3. Since the compressor cylinders are designed to be double-acting, there will always be
proper reversal throughout the life of the compressor.

4. Failed valves or improper cylinder configuration could lead to a non-reversing

condition.
Date:

5. Tail rods are used to help balance opposing throws.

6. Smaller cylinders stand a greater chance of suffering a non-reversing condition.

7. A failed valve, if in a critical location, could lead to a crosshead failure.

8. Valves should only need to be monitored if they are suspected of having failed.

9. Smaller diameters cylinders, as long as the valves are in good operating condition, will
never be subject to a non-reversing condition.

10. Dresser-Rand always recommends unloading or removing the frame end suction
valve/s when single acting a cylinder.
