The VIP Cylinder…

…a product

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

VIP History
Starting with a clean sheet of paper in 1988, the
following design criteria was used:
First-class in performance.
Capable of running at higher speeds - to better match
new, smaller, less expensive, high speed drivers.
Minimized reciprocating masses for minimum inertia
forces.

Developed and tested through 1993

First unit delivered in 1994.

Conventional vs. VIP
Conventional VIP

•Fewer components
•Lighter

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

VIP Advantages
•Simpler design
•Easier to cast
•Less machining

•Less material used

•Less scrap
•Shorter machining times
•More dependable deliveries

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

Conventional Cylinders
•Large number of components
•4, 8, or 12 valves
•Gaskets
•Retainers
•Valve covers
(greater chance of
fugitive emissions)
•Studs
•Nuts

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

VIP cylinders
•Fewer components
•4 internal valves only (no valve covers = less chance
for fugitive emissions
•Rings
•Head with o-ring and fasteners

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

VIP Maintenance is easy
• All valves removed at waist level through one opening

• Discharge valves
are joined together
and are removed
from the rod as a
single unit, thus
leaving the rod
in place

• The inboard suction valve can be removed with the rod in

place

Gas Flow, Conventional Cyl.
Flow path is complex

•Small passages
•Numerous valve
retainers
•Restrictive scallops
and partially blinded
Piston
valves (causes non
parallel plate action and
uneven plate wear
•Results in higher
power losses

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

Gas Flow, VIP
Gas flow is direct and simple
• Large passages Suction valve

• No valve restrictions Discharge valve

(allows for parallel plate action and
even plate wear)

• Gas flows evenly through

the suction valve as it enters
the cylinder, no valve or
cage restrictions
• Gas flows evenly through
the discharge valve as it

Cylinder Clearance, Conventional
Higher Fixed clearance determined by:
• Volumes of gas
passages in 4, 8 or
12 valves.
• Volumes in the
setbacks of 4, 8 or
12 valves.
• Volumes of the
scallops in the
heads
• All result in lower
volumetric
efficiency

“From The Wellhead Through The Pipeline…Hanover People Perform.”

Cylinder Clearance, VIP
Lower Fixed clearance determined by:
•Volume between
piston and
suction
valve
•Volumes of the
valves’ gas
passages
•Results in
higher volumetric
efficiencies
