SESSION 2016/2017

COURSE CODE : SKEE 4613

COURSE NAME : HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING AND

CALIBRATION

LECTURERS : DR. ZURAIMY ADZIS

PROGRAMME : SKEE

SECTION : 01 & 02

TIME : 2 HOURS 30 MINUTES

DATE :

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATE : ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.

CANDIDATES ARE ALLOWED TO BRING IN THE EXAMINATION HALL PRINTS OF

THE STANDARDS PROVIDED FOR THIS COURSE ONLY. THE PRINTS SHOULD NOT
HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL TEXT OR WRITINGS, WHICH CLASSIFIES THEM AS

Q1. a) In your own words, generally describe a technical standard and explain
its role in today’s research and industry environment.
(5 marks)
b) What are the key resources required when making measurements? (Hint
4Ms + 1E)
(4 marks)
c) Describe the tests below on the aspect of its purpose and measurement
parameters :
i) Impulse Withstand Test
(2 marks)
ii) Partial Discharge Test
(2 marks)
iii) HVAC Withstand Test.
(2 marks)

d) Describe and distinguish the terms below :

i) Type Test and Routine Test
(4 marks)

Q2. a) Figure Q2 (a) (refer to page 4) shows the front page of a Withstand Test
report for HV cable. List down at least 2 non-conformance found in the
report and indicate which clause of the ISO 17025 reiterates that
requirement.
(7 marks)

b) Table Q2 (b) shows the result of a High Voltage meter calibration. Based
on Table Q2 (b), answer questions below.

i) When the calibrated equipment reads 41.4 kV, what is the true
measurement?
ii) When it reads 89.9 kV, what is the range of possible true measurement
with at least 95% confidence level?

(10 marks)
Table Q2 (b)

c) Locking Out and Tagging Out (LOTO) is a safety procedure which is

used in industry and research settings to ensure that dangerous machines
are properly shut off and not started up again prior to the completion of
maintenance or servicing work. Plan the general procedure and give an
example of a LOTO procedure on a high voltage equipment with charge
storage capability.

Q3. a) With a suitable example, define the terms below,

i) Standard uncertainty of a measurement

(3 marks)
ii) Type A and B errors
(4 marks)
iii) Expanded uncertainty and confidence level
(4 marks)

b) Figure Q3 (b) (shown in page 6) shows the outcome of a calibration of a

high voltage meter for the 5 kV measurement. Using the guidelines of
IEEE Standard 4, fill in the two blanks indicated in your answer sheet,
namely the Uc and Ue (the combined uncertainty and the expanded
uncertainty respectively). Clearly show how you obtained your answer.
Note: Some cells are left blank purposely for you to figure out.
(10 marks)

c) Plan the guidelines (according to priority) when performing

troubleshooting or maintenance work on an energized High Voltage
equipment with energy storage capability.

voltage meters. . The details of the divider used can be referred to details in Figure
Q3 (b). With the information provided and based on the Annex D of the IEEE
Standard 4, please show detailed steps in obtaining

i) the uncertainty estimation of that measurement

(11 marks)

ii) the absolute correction for that measurement
