Q1 a) The performance characteristics of an instrument are mainly divided into two


categories, namely Static characteristics and Dynamic characteristics. Explain all the
terms below (with diagram if necessary).

b) Refer to the op amp in figure below, if vi = 0.5V, Calculate the output voltage vo, and
the current in the 10k Ohm resistor.

c) Calculate vo and io in the summing amplifier below.

Q2 (a) Explain the difference between systematic and random errors. Give two (2) examples of
the typical sources for each types of error.

(b) Refer to the op amp in Figure Q3. If vi = 0.5 V, calculate :
(i) The output voltage vo
(ii) The current in 10k  resistor

(c) The following resistance values of a platinum resistance thermometer were measured at
a range of temperatures (Table Q3 (b)). Draw the graph and determine the
measurement sensitivity of the instrument in Ω / °C .

(d) A spring balance is calibrated in an environment at a temperature of 20°C and has the
following deflection / load characteristic (Table Q3 (c)).

It is then used in an environment at a temperature of 30°C and the following deflection/


load characteristic is measured (Table Q3 (d)).

Determine the zero drift and sensitivity drift per °C change in ambient temperature.
