Question 1.
a) Draw the circuit diagram and state the output equation for the following operational
amplifier configurations:

i. The inverting amplifier.


ii. The integrator.
iii. The differentiator.

b) Using only one operational amplifier, draw a circuit that will produce the output,

Question 2.
a) Draw the characteristics curve for an SCR and explain how it works.
[6 marks]
b) Briefly explain four ways that an SCR may be turned on.
[4 marks]
c) Explain why SCR’s must be protected from high dv/dt and di/dt, and indicate what can be
done to protect them from each.
[6 marks]
d) Explain how a TRIAC and DIAC differ from an SCR.
[4 marks]

Question 3.
a) Describe the operation of the following:
i. Current source inverter
ii. Voltage source inverter

b) Use diagrams to illustrate the function of an uninterruptable power supply and Explain the
operations of the following devices:
i. On-line UPS
ii. Standby UPS

c) Describe the process of static frequency conversion.

Question 4.

a) Using a 555 timer design a monostable multivibrator that will produce an output waveform
of width 765µs, use a capacitor value of 270µF. Draw the circuit configuration and sketch
the output.

b) For the circuit configuration shown in Figure 2, calculate the following:


i. Ton
ii. Toff
iii. Duty Cycle
iv. Frequency

Question 5.

a) State the different classes of amplifiers and give a brief summary of each.

b) Draw the diagram for a class B complementary symmetry push-pull circuit and explain its
operation when a sinusoidal input is applied.
[4 marks]
c) Explain the origin of crossover distortion and describe a method to minimize this
distortion.
[3 marks]

d) If the input voltage Vi to the power amplifier shown in Figure 3 below is 18V rms.
Calculate:
(i.) Po(ac).
(ii.) Pi(dc).
(iii.) %η.
(iv.) Power dissipated by each output transistor.
