What is TikTok

■ TikTok is a popular social media app that allows users to watch, create, and share
15-second videos shot on cellphones.
■ the app is characterized by its addictive quality and high levels of engagement.
Besides adding effects like filters, background music, and stickers to their videos,
users can also collaborate on content even if they're in different locations and create
split-screen duet videos.
■ Launched in 2016 by startup ByteDance in China, where it's known as Douyin,
TikTok absorbed a similar Chinese video app called musical.ly in August 2018.
ByteDance purchased the lip sync-app for an estimated $1 billion the previous year.
■ ByteDance was reportedly valued at $75 billion as of 2018, making it the most
valuable startup in the world. It owns several other apps and raised $3 billion from
investors, including SoftBank Group, KKR, K3 Ventures, TCV, and General Atlantic
User Base

■ TikTok is one of the world's most popular social media apps and is available in more
than 150 different markets and in 75 languages. The app hit one billion downloads as of
February 2019, with two million downloads alone as of January 2020, according to
market analyst Sensor Tower.
■ TikTok has been downloaded 25.5 million times in Pakistan since its launch, becoming
one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the country.
■ Here's a breakdown of some of the app's most notable statistics:
■ Popular with young people, China is one of the countries with the most downloads. In
fact, more than 150 million people are actively using TikTok in the country.
■ A quarter of the app's downloads come from India, with more than 20 million active
users.
■ Usage in Thailand is increasing, with one in seven people downloading the app.
■ About 96 million downloads are from the U.S.
Brands

■ TikTok is quirky by nature, brands need to be creative to truly gain attention

from their audience. A simple ad or sponsored influencer endorsement might
not cut it on this creative and fast-paced app.
■ While it's too early to create a list of best practices around TikTok marketing,
it's a great time to start getting inspired by the brands who've already
thought outside the box and succeeded on the app.
■ Given the large active user base in Pakistan, Pakistani brands should look
towards TikTok to start marketing products and services.
■ Creating Viral challenges to start trends is one possible way of using the app
to help promote their brand.
Chipotle

■ Chipotle is quite new to TikTok,

but has been doing very well so
far. They also have one of the
best TikTok bios we’ve seen –
“Less Tok, More Guac”.
■ They’re consistent, which is also
very important on the platform.
■ Their first video is pretty creative
and acts as if the chips are
singing along with Adele.
Guess

■ While Guess only has 35,000 fans

and just three posts, the high-
fashion company is included on this
list because they were the first to
launch a challenge on TikTok.
■ Shortly after the app launched,
TikTok partnered with Guess for the
#InMyDenim challenge, which
encouraged users to film
themselves in interesting places
while wearing Guess' new denim
line. They also had to overlay Bebe
Rexha's "I'm A Mess."
■ This is was the first branded
challenge to go viral on TikTok.
NBA

■ The NBA was one of TikTok’s

early adopters they consistently
put out great content on the
platform.
■ They’ve racked up a whopping
5.5 million fans on the app, by far
the most we’ve seen from any
brand. Showing highlight reels of
recent matches as well as
highlights of memorable
matches. They keep things pretty
funny, which definitely helps.
San Diego Zoo

■ Everyone loves a cute animal video once

in a while. And the San Diego Zoo's
TikTok account pleasantly takes
advantage of this well-known fact.
■ The zoo's strategy is simple: Post videos
of cute animals with fun music. And with
over 50,000 fans, it seems to be working.
■ The zoo has also dueted with other
animal-friendly accounts, like the
Monterey Aquarium
■ This is a great example of how two
similar brands can cross-promote using
TikTok features. Because of the zoo's
tagging strategy, this video might be
seen by fans of the aquarium and the
zoo. This way, zoo followers might gain
more interest in the aquarium and vice
versa.
Elf Cosmetics

■ Elf Cosmetics has been doing an

incredible job on TikTok. Elf
commissioned a song specifically for a
TikTok campaign.
■ The song, which takes inspiration
from Kash Doll’s 2018 hit “Ice Me
Out” and is called “Eyes Lips Face”
after the brand name’s acronym, is
believed to be the first original song
commissioned for a TikTok campaign.
■ The brand then worked with a few
influencers to initially kick it off, and
the results from there have been
mind-blowing.
