What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi (or WiFi) is a Local Area Wireless

Technology that allows electronic
devices to participate in computer
networking using 2.4 GHz UHF and
5 GHz SHF radio bands.
FUNCTIONALITY

• Many devices can use Wi-Fi, e.g. personal computers,

smartphones, tablet computers.
• These can connect to a network resource such as the
Internet via a wireless network access point.
• Such an access point (or hotspot) has a range of
about 20 meters (66 feet) indoors and a greater
range outdoors. A greater coverage can be achieved
by using multiple overlapping access points.

Internet Access

• Usually Wi-Fi is used to connect to the internet but it

doesn’t mean that Wi-Fi is internet.

• Wi-Fi just provides a wireless connection between the

device and the internet source (modem).

• Since the cellular data is expensive and slower, people

do prefer using Wi-Fi for faster and comparatively cost
efficient internet as multiple devices can work on same
broadband internet connection.

Businesses and Organizations

Organizations and businesses, such as airports, hotels, and

restaurants, often provide free-use hotspots to attract customers.

Enthusiasts or authorities who wish to provide services or even to

promote business in selected areas sometimes provide free Wi-Fi
access.

Also Wi-Fi networks inside an organization helps in sharing

information, provide a localized cloud environment to increase
efficiency in the organisation

According to Forbes, 90% of customers spend more time and money

in places with free Wi-Fi.

A LIFE WITHOUT WI-FI

BLUETOOTH AND INFRARED NOT A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE AS SIGNAL STRENGTH,

RANGE, FREQUENCY IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HANDLE A SMALL NETWORK

CABLES FOR EVERY SMALL TASK

WIRELESS DATA TRANSFER AT AWFULLY SLOW SPEED

MOBILE DEVICES WOULD BE FORCED TO USE CELLULAR DATA CONNECTION WHICH

IS A MORE EXPENSIVE WAY TO ACCESS INTERNET

CHECKING FOR ERRORS IN LOCAL AREA NETWORKS WOULD BE A DISASTER

PROS OF WI-FI

It provides fast internet access

Its cost efficient compared to cellular mobile data

flexible

Its easy to install

Provides faster data transfer rates than bluetooth

CONS OF Wi-Fi

SENSITIVE TO SIGNAL STRENGTH

SECURITY ISSUES CAN ARISE DUE TO NON AVAILABILITY OF PHYSICAL

TRANSMISSION MEDIA

FIREWALLS, ANTI VIRUS, ENCRYPTION ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A SECURE

NUMBER OF DEVICES AFFECT THE CONNECTION STRENGTH AND SPEED

CONCLUSION

Technology has a huge impact on our lives.

It has become an extension of our mind. We can’t imagine a world without

technology and Wi-Fi has become an integral part of it.

Even if we don’t realize, we are surrounded by this technology. Its used for
almost anything like, for connecting to internet, for playing games, for sharing
files.

Be it for our home or our business space a lot of systems are now connected
together in a way that was not possible before Wi-Fi.
