Bhoruka Power Corporation
Involved in Production, collection and distribution of electricity
OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANISATION

Hydro Power Project may be used as one of the options for achieving the
energy targets in a developing country like India where center or state
Governments have limited financial resources to put in large projects which
require long gestation period. One additional advantage with the Small
Hydro Power. Project is that private partners may get attracted due to low
investment and quicker return in comparison to large projects. The last but
not least is the most eco friendliness of small power projects which is a
point of serious concern in case of thermal, or nuclear or sometimes in big
Hydro power projects depending upon the location of the projects.
Outlook of plant structure
How Hydropower Works:

Hydropower plants capture the

energy of falling water to generate
electricity.
 A turbine converts the kinetic
energy of falling water into
mechanical energy.
Then a generator converts the
mechanical energy from the turbine
into electrical energy.
SKILLS LEARNT
 Analysing problems in the generator
 Replacing valves.
 Servicing of gear box.
 Repairing filters.
 Lubrication works in turbine.
 Checking engine, generator, mechanical and electric parameter
Generator:

 The hydro-electric generators supplied

for this installation are for vertical
shaft salient pole type.
 They have a combined thrust and guide
bearing located below the rotor and a
guide bearing above the rotor.
 The ventilating air is circulated by
centrifugal fans fitted at each end of
the rotor.
Problems in Generators
 Low coolant, no coolant which causes overheating, over
crank, cracked heads, broken pistons, catastrophic engine
failure.
 Lack of fuel, bad fuel, sludge in the fuel tank or lines.
  A generator could suffer from oil, fuel, or coolant leaks.
 Burnt components on the boards, electrical components,
stepper motors.
 Damages caused by weather and pests.
Turbine
Type: Vertical Full Kaplan Turbine
Project data:

Net Head 5.70M

Nominal Flow 32.20 m3/sec

Rated output 1644 KW

Nominal Runner Speed 132 RPM

Max Runner Speed 382 RPM

Runner Dia 3000mm

 Vertical full Kaplan double regulated Kaplan type turbines
are used.
 The Turbine is directly coupled to an generator with a rated
capacity of 900 KW Vertical shaft Kaplan type turbine of
draft tube, spiral casing and stay ring, guide bearing, shaft
seal, oil header.
 Turbine equipment includes one electro hydraulic governor,
one oil pressure unit for governing system of turbine.
Replacing of valves
  hydraulic machinery and their valves are
subject to an increased number of
start/stop cycles due to changes in the grid
demands.
 Valves are exposed to high loads during
operation.
 To avoid the problems regarding valves
we should maintain a proper distribution
of loads.
 If valve is not working properly then we
should replace it by a new efficient valve.
Maintaining a gear box
 Keep Your Gearbox Lubricated At All
Times.
 Always Keep Your Gearbox Clean.
 Ensure Proper Cooling Of Your Gearbox.
 Keep An Eye On Gear Teeth For Damage. .
 Analyze The vibrations of your gearbox.
 High-efficiency helical bevel gearboxes are
up to 30% more efficient than the
traditional worm gearbox. Only use worm
gears for motors of less than 7.5 kW.
Repairing filters
 Filters removes the contaminants from
intake water which may affect the
turbine blades.
 After a long run filters wear out and
allows the intake water without
filtration.
 In these cases we analyze the problems
and part which should be replaced or
repaired.
 Salt water is a major cause for filter
problems.
Air Coolers

 Each of the air coolers consists of the nest

Cuprous Nickel tube wound with copper wire
covered in a mild steel frame.
 The tube ends are roller expanded into mild
steel tube plates on which are mounted the inlet
and return end water boxes fabricated from mild
steel.
 Thickness of water box includes generous curto
allowance and these are internally subdivided to
provide for multiple water passes tor requisite
now pattern.
Control room

 Control room consists of relay panels,

control desk for generator, transformer
and line.
 Protection switch in intake control panel
should be in 'Old position.
 Close the Field breaker.
 If AVR is in Auto mode voltage(11KV)
will build-up automatically.
ADVANTAGES

1.Economic energy source.

2. No reservoir required.

3.Utilize natural flow of water.

4.No harmful effect on surrounding.

5.No costly equipment used.

DISADVANTAGES
1. Low power generation during summer months.

2.Suitable site characteristics required.

3.Efficiency is low.
CONCLUSION:
In order to achieve a growth rate of 7-8% as
envisaged National policy of India, it is also
required to tap all the small Hydro Power potential
of the country.
Hydro Power Project sector, especially in view of
the fact that Large Hydro power projects involve
huge capital investment and long gestation period
which private partners do not afford to bear.
The utilization of small Hydro Power Potential is
especially required in all states where the utilized
potential very low like in MP and therefore
optimum utilization of the same may set up an
stepping up stone for achieving self sufficiency in
power sector in country.
