Northumberlandia, Newcastle, England

Northumberlandia is another truly unusual example of how

mining operations and public use of land can go hand in hand.
This project was completed in 2012 in the area of Cramlington,
Northumberland, in northern England. Actually,
Northumberlandia is considered a restoration-first project,
wherein mining operations are ongoing while an extra piece of
land near the mine was converted to a large public park, partly
using material excavated from the mine. The cost of the project
was £3 million (double the average costs for a mine reclamation
project); both the creation of the park and its maintenance are
privately funded by the Banks Mining Group and the Blagdon
Estates. The park is open to the public free of charge.
Old Works Golf Course

The new more modern Washoe Smelter had the capacity to process
all of the ore from the Butte mines, resulting in the dismantling and
closure of the Old Works. The location lay idle until 1983 when it
became a super fund cleanup site. In 1989, Anaconda citizen's
formed a group to promote the construction of a "world class" golf
course on the site. Through hard work and cooperation, between the
community, ARCO, State and Federal Agencies along with golf legend
Jack Nicklaus, ground was broken on May 26, 1994.
STEARNS QUARRY PARK

 Located in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, the site was a

limestone quarry from the 1833 to 1969. After quarry operations
ceased, the area served as a landfill for construction debris.
 The City decided to pursue project options which would fill the hole
in the neighborhood and add needed public green space. The
resulting 27-acre park includes an athletic field, wetlands, a meadow,
and walking paths. Historic quarry walls were maintained in the
design and recycled materials were used in the construction
materials. Native flora – such as prairie grasses, poppies, and black-
eyed susans – were used in the on site plantings. The park design
includes using natural elements to manage stormwater including a
wetland which drains rainwater into a park pond.
