This document summarizes the background and formation of a team that designed an affordable incubator for premature and low-birth-weight babies in developing countries. Each year many premature babies are born in developing countries where incubators are rare and expensive. A design challenge was issued to create a better, more affordable incubator. A team was formed to address this need, consisting of four students and one additional member from another incubator design team. They launched their project in 2007 and formed their company in 2008 to commercialize and distribute their incubator design.

• Each year, 20 million premature and low-birth-weight babies are born. In
developing countries, mortality for these infants is particularly high because incubators are extremely rare. Most hospitals and clinics in developing countries don’t have enough incubators to meet the tremendous need. New incubators are extremely expensive, and donated incubators are confusing to operate and are difficult to maintain and repair. Design That Matters challenged our Extreme Affordability students to design a better incubator for the developing world. • This kind of hands-on research can even change your understanding of who your end user is, as it did for one of our teams when they changed their approach from designing for hospitals and clinics to designing for rural mothers in their villages. • Another place to find inspiration is to look for new ideas from different cultures or organizations. This kind of cross-pollination between departments, companies and industries can be particularly useful for individuals who have been working at the same job for a while.
