He designed a series of houses

numbered from 1 to 10 as an
experiment to test the tension
between ideas concepts and
practice House 10
House 6
House VI
While designing these he ignored the
modernist view of function as an
important aspect ,started from a cube
with vertical and horizontal grid
Cornwall, Connecticut
Client : Mr. and Mrs. Frank
(an art historian and a photographer couple )
A holiday home.

The only building in the 6

acre plot.
Construction time 1972-75
Simple post and beam
system.
Materials were wood and
concrete.
The design manipulates rectangular planes
cubic voids and linear elements which is
transformed and made complex by
unwritten rules.
• Another curious aspect is an upside
down staircase, the element which
portrays the axis of the house and
is painted red to draw attention.

Red : non fuctional

Green : functional
but without a railing
Columns penetrate walls or floors and even float in
the mid air.
Slits and other vertical elements help create
geometry and rhythm
One of the columns in the kitchen
isnt even touching the floor
intentionally done to obstruct
human circulation in house
