STRTIGRAPHY IN BANGLADESH

The sedimentary rock sequence on and beneath the surface of Bangladesh has
been subdivided into stratigraphic units based on lithology of the rock i. e. the
type and nature of rock layers.

Rock layers are divided into fundamental units named as ‘Formation’. Two or
more Formations together form a ‘Group’.

STRATIGRAPHIC UNITS OF BANGLADESH

These units are correlated with those of Assam.

The units are named Bhuban Formation,Bokabil Formation, etc.
Stratigraphic subdivision here follows the broad tectonic divisions of the
country.
There are two stratigraphic subdivisions in practice :

1. Precambian Stable Platform

2. Deep Basin
STRATIGRAPHY OF STABLE PLATFORM

The Precambrian granitic basement occur at a shallowest depth of 130 metre

below surface in the Rangpur saddle area and dips towards southeast under
increasing sedimentary cover ranging in age from Permian to Recent.
Sedimentary thickness in Rangpur saddle is up to about 1 km.
This section is devided into more subunits.

THE GONDWANA GROUP

The oldest strtigraphic unit in Bangladesh of Permian age.this unit rests

unconformably on the Precambian crystalline granitic basement. The group is
composed of hard feldspathic sandstonewith coal layers as well as some
conglomerate and shale.

It has two formations :

1. Kuchma Formatiion
2. Paharpur Formation
STRATIGRAPHY OF DEEP BASIN

The stratigraphy of the deep basin to the southeast is characterized by an enormous

thickness of Tertiary sedimentary succession.
It has been suggested that Bangladesh has the thickest accumulation of sedimentary
deposit in the world. This is a record of rapid subsidence and sedimentation.
The sequence of the rocks encountered in the deep basin area is Oligocene to Recent in
age is described next.

THE SURMA GROUP

The Surma Group is the most important strtigraphic unit in terms of thickness and economic
importance.
It is divided into two formations ,both essentially composed of alternating sandstone and
shale.
The lower more sandy Bhuban Formation is overlain by an upper more argillaceous Bokabil
Formation.
The unit is deposited in deltaic to shallow marine environment.
STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK OF
BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is covered for a greater part by alluvium deposited by three

mighty rivers, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and Meghna and their
innumerable tributaries. The Bangladesh portion of the Bengal Basin can
be divided into three main structural units namely :

1. Stable Platform
2. The Deeper Basin
3. The Hinge zone
TECTONIC UNITS OF
BANGLADESH
STABLE PLATFORM

Occupies Rajshahi-Rangpur-Dinajpur areas; geologically stable in relative term

and has not been affected by fold movement.

It is divided into two sub units :

1. Rangpur saddle in the north (referred to as Dinajpur shield)
2. Bogra shelf (referred to as foreland shelf)
THE DEEPER BASIN
Lies to the south and east of stable platform, occupies greater Dhaka-Noakhali-
Sylhet-Comilla-Chittagong and Chittagong Hill Tracts areas and the Bay of
Bengal. It is subdivided into two parts :
1. The Fold Belt : Is characterized by folding of the sedimentary layers into a
series of anticlines and synclines. The anticlines form the hills and the
synclines form valleys as seen in the topography of the Chittagong-comilla-
Sylhet regions.
2. The foredeep : Is characterized by only mild or no folding. The unit
covers the central part of the basin and is represented by river plain to delta
plain topography at the surface.
THE HINGE ZONE

This unit is a 25 km wide northeast-southwest zone that separates stable platform in the
northwest from deep basin to the southeast.

It is not a tectonic hinge but represents Eocene shelf edge break.

It is also known as Eocene hinge zone.
