AIDS and Retroviruses
• AIDS – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is caused by the
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
• HIV is a retrovirus…it attacks cells lymphocytes (white blood
cells) and it infects T-Cells to replicate itself.
• Because the immune system is compromised, the infected
person is susceptible to common diseases such as the flu and
can develop more serious diseases like pneumonia and cancer.
