Project Report

Vaccination Reminder
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A sincere gratitude to all our innovative teachers, enthusiastic friends and supportive family. They
couldn’t have made a greater contribution. We would like to thank our teacher, Anand sir who made
us accountable to do this incredible project as a team. We would also like to thank LOCUS for
giving us this platform and creative environment to make our ideas a reality. We'd like to express
heartfelt thanks for giving us the freedom to choose a project for our own selves that helps us to
work independently and enhance the unity between all teammates and share each other’s knowledge.
We extended our due thanks to LOCUS who gave us enough time to submit the project. Thanks to
everybody who has been in our life , that is the only reason we are led to inspiration and creation of
our Auto-Lighting System/ Room. It is indeed a great pleasure to submit this report at locus
considering the project we are about to make.
Abstract
Physical health and well being are a special concern in remote areas and hard a
problem to solve. Difficulty in transportation, communication and lack of health
awareness and education are just a few problems to name. Especially as a child is
born, people in remote areas are clueless and illiterate about their infant health. Few
children are lucky enough to be vaccinated while the majority suffer from worse
complications like malnutrition, polio, hepatitis just because of untimely or no
vaccination. Thus to solve this grave problem of infant and child mortality rate, we
have embarked on a project to build a Vaccination Reminder System so that such
heartbreaking cases can be avoided by the mother, family and the nation.

Vaccination Reminder Lamp
The Project: Vaccination Reminder System

a) Introduction:
An aspiring engineers and entrepreneurs full of vigor and ambition have come up with a historic
project that will solve problems of rural health, especially cases of infant mortality. With timely
reminder of, “When to take the newborn child to hospital and for which disease prevention”, the
results and boost in good health quality will be phenomenal.
Background and statement of problems

In remote areas of Nepal like Humla and Jumla, there are almost nil or no means of effective and
immediate transportation. Similarly, there are no proper communication modules and accessibilities.
The areas also suffer from irregular electricity and power cuts.
Taking these crucial drawbacks into account, we had to come up with a Solar power system, which
has a lamp and also Vaccination Reminder System embedded in it.
The VRS system would use a Microcontroller, Real time clock sensor and solar cells as it’s crucial
element and factors for it’s design.
Objectives/Scope

Our project revolves around multiple, key goal of ours:

1. To make an effective Vaccination Reminder System model utilizing LOCUS resources and
connections for discounted purchase.
2. To further upgrade our Lamp VRS and present it to United Nations Nepal in future.
3. To make it feasible and viable in all remote areas of Nepal.
4. To make our visitors, customers and appreciators happy and satisfied.
Literature review:
In remote areas of Nepal, there is still no electricity, internet connection, televisions etc. They are
almost completely isolated from all other parts of the world. People are illiterate and unaware of most
of the important worldly affairs which has been affecting their lifestyle, living standard, eating habits
etc. the most important issues of all that have been neglected by people for ages which in turn, affect
their own lives and the lives of generations of a specific area is health and hygiene which includes
vaccination. Vaccination is the administration of a vaccine to help the immune system develop
protection from a disease. Vaccines contain a microorganism or virus in a weakened, live or killed
state, or proteins or toxins from the organism. Most of the people are either not aware, or they are
completely ignorant to the fact that it is important for all children no matter how uncomplicated their
preganancy might have turned out. Our project is a small initiation proposed by the UN, the statistic
partner of the LOCUS, to make this project for the development of health of the remote areas of the
country.
The Project:

Prototype: This system is designed by using RTC module, pushbutton, buzzer, 3 sets
of LED and Arduino UNO board. The circuit is designed in such a way that when the
push button is pressed, the RTC module notes down the current timestamp in the
module. After which at an interval of every 500 milliseconds, it checks the difference
of current timestamp and the timestamp when the push button was pressed. If the
difference is between 5 to 10 second, 15 to 20 second, 25 to 30 second, the buzzer
buzzes and blue, green and red LED blinks respectively.
Real model: The system constitutes a solar lamp mainly because the vaccination reminder machine
can be useful for other times and the lamp will make the product appealing as it requires no power
supply or electricity. The lamp looks like a tree which has names of all the diseases and their
required vaccinations' name in the local language where this lamp is being distributed by UNICEF
so it is convenient for the local people to read it. When a child is born, parents are educated how the
model works viz. to press a button after which the date and time is noted by the system. When it is
time for the child to be given a particular vaccination, blue light glows with buzzer before 15 days.
Right on the day of vaccination, green light glows with buzzer and after 15 days, red light glows. It
continues twice a day (9 a.m. and 9p.m.)
Logical Circuit Diagram
Feasibility analysis:
Vaccination reminder tree helps conserve costs, save energy, light homes in villages
where electricity cant reach and also prevent children from different diseases.
They are affordable and also cheap and very applicable for the people in rural areas.
The equipment used to make them are also easily available and do not require very
skilled manpower.
The key devices needed are:
1) Arduino UNO
2) Solar
3) LED
4) RTC DS3231
5) Alarming buzzer
Finally, our cost estimation is projected to be around $20-25.
CONCLUSION
All in all, our project is very much feasible and convenient to be used. The product of
which, is going to be the Vaccination tree which can be setup in any rural
underdeveloped villages. Our honesty in teamwork is amazing and we will be
watching each other’s step throughout the completion of this idea. Our team can be
entrusted to carry on forth with this mission of making Vaccination tree prevail in the
country.

LOCUS: LOCUS is an umbrella organization led by undergraduate students of Electrical,

Electronics and Computer Engineering departments from IOE, Pulchowk Campus. All
activities are guided by a single compass: fostering collaboration. Since its inception in
2003, LOCUS has provided a platform for young innovators from schools and colleges all
over Nepal to showcase their skill and knowledge. It organizes an annual 3-day festival,
where participants from different corners of Nepal compete under different categories for
prizes and glory.
Instrumentation: Instrumentation is a collective term for measuring instruments that are
used for indicating, measuring and recording physical quantities such as flow, temperature,
level, distance, angle, or pressure. The term has its origins in the art and science of scientific
instrument-making. Instrumentation can refer to devices as simple as direct-
reading thermometers, or as complex as multi-sensor components of industrial control
systems. Today, instruments can be found in laboratories, refineries, factories and vehicles,
as well as in everyday household use (e.g., smoke detectors and thermostats)
