Rio de Janeiro's carnival

 Carnival celebrations were brought to Brazil by Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch sailors
where they mixed with Afro-Brazilian culture, acquiring their special character, and are
associated with parades with floats, costumes, popular dances and excesses.1 Despite
Catholic inspiration, its European origins go back to a kind of carnival called introito and
entrudo in Portuguese, which is characterized by the game of throwing water from one
person to another to purify the body.
Origins

 The origin of its celebration seems likely to be in the pagan festivals, such as those held in
honor of Bacchus, the Roman god of chaos, the festival and wine, the Saturnalia and the
Roman lupercales, or those held in honor of the Apis bull in Egypt.
Music

 Samba:Originating in Bahia, but developed in Rio de Janeiro between the end of the 19th
century and the first years of the 20th century, samba is still one of the most popular
musical styles in Brazil. From intimate samba-canções (samba) sung in bars to explosive
drum parades held during carnival, samba always evokes a warm and vibrant atmosphere.
