SELF LEARNING HOME SESSION -

AN INITIATIVE OF
VELAMMAL VIDHYASHRAM
CLASS :V SUBJECT:
SCIENCE

TOPIC: FORCE, ENERGY AND MACHINES

LEARNING OUTCOMES :
1.Define force
2.Explain the effects of force
COMPETENCY FOCUSSED ON:
Concepts and Facts
SUB CONCEPTS :
1.Force
2.Effects of force
• CONCEPT MAP

Force
1.Effects 2.Types
• Can move stationary objects A.Contact force - Friction
• Can stop a moving object B.Non-contact forces
• Can change the direction 1.Gravitational force
• Can change the speed 2.Electrostatic force
• Can change the shape and size 3.Magnetic force
A force can change
the speed of a
moving object
Children
Any Guess about the topic you are
going to learn.
Find from this picture, The first boy
is pushing the object and the
second boy is pulling the object.
Recall from Grade 4
What is a push or a pull on an
object?
Yes children, it is Force.
Hands on Experiment
• Let's learn the effects of force.
• 1.Force can move a stationary object
• Stationary means an object which is at rest position. You must know about
stationery also which means things like pen, pencil, ruler, eraser etc.
• Kick a ball.What happens?It moves forward.So force can move a
stationary object
• 2.Force can stop a moving object
• When your are riding a bicycle ,You apply force to the brake system,So the
bicycle stops.
Hands on Experiment
• 3.Force can change the direction of a moving object
• When you hit a cricket ball coming towards you with your bat,the ball
changes its direction due to the force applied on it.
• 4.Force can change the speed of a moving object
• When your Father applies more force on the Accelerator of the
car,What happens? The speed of the car is increased.
• 5.Force can change the shape and size of an object
• Take a cashew nut then apply force with your fingers, the nut breaks
into pieces. For shape ,Observe Making of a Chapatti.
Examples
Other examples to learn effects of force:
Open and close a door
Blow a balloon
Squeeze an inflated balloon
Activity
• Apply force to the small objects in your room and change the
arrangement of things in your room.
• Apply force to clean your garden - Remove the unwanted plants.
• Apply force and help your mother in household Activities.

• Observe the pictures and
identify them as pushing or
pulling force.
Recap
• A force is a push or a pull on an object.
• Effects of force
• Can move stationary objects
