What moments

brought you great

joy?
What filled you with
pain and sadness?
is the end of bodily
functions which signals the
end of a person’s life
separation of body and
soul
The human person is an
embodied spirit. The body
grows and dies, while the
soul continues to exist
even after the body has
passed.
There is no freedom in the
inevitability (sure to
happen) of death.
But we have freedom to
live our lives well or not.
means that the life of a
person is temporary
challenges us to make
choices that will be good
for us and the people
around us
What is the end of this
life?
1. Terminus – full stop or
end of the line
2. Telos – goal, purpose or
fulfillment
Human person is not born
to die. Man is put on earth
to live a meaningful life, be
virtuous and achieve
excellence.
“For I know the plans I have
for you, declares the Lord,
plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to
give you hope and a future.”
Experiences that make us
reflect on the meaning of
life
1.Happiness
2.Suffering
 an achievement and it
must be gained by living a
productive and moral life
 Religious philosophers
consider happiness as a
union with God while others
view happiness as “whole-
life satisfaction”.
 is the state of being (overall
physical condition), not just an
emotional experience or a
chosen mental attitude; we do
not choose happiness; we
choose the means to achieve it
 is a source of happiness
and it has 3 kinds:
1. noble good
2.useful good
3. pleasurable good
 Noble – having, showing,
or coming from personal
qualities that people admire
(such as honesty,
generosity, courage)
 a good in which is
pursued for its own sake; it
is good in itself.
 examples are the fruits of
the Holy Spirit
is considered good so long as
it serves as a means to an end
its goodness is found only
from what it can provide
example, money is good as it
can buy you something
isgood so long as it provides
some form of pleasure,
though it does not have to be
physical
NOBLE
vs.
USEFUL
vs.
PLEASURABLE
Useful good and pleasurable
good may provide temporary
happiness, but NOBLE good
can only provide permanent
and lasting happiness.
 takes place when we
patiently endure
unpleasantness, discomfort,
and pain
Consider it pure joy, my
brothers, when you face trials
of many kinds, because you
know that the testing of your
faith develops perseverance
(determination).
1. Physical – when we
experience physical
sensations such as
discomfort, hunger, distress
and pain
1. Mental – involves
emotional and mental
states such as depression,
anxiety, fear, loneliness and
grief
 viewed as an undesirable
condition, and that we
naturally seek pleasure and
avoid pain
 another view states that
suffering is necessary in
shaping our existence
because without it, we are
unable to grow
as we approach death, we
experience both happiness
and suffering
Although we will eventually
die, we have an opportunity
to enrich our lives as well as
the lives of others.
Be happy, young man, while
you are young, and let your
heart give you joy in the days
of your youth. Follow the
ways of your heart and
whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these
things God sill bring you to
judgment.
For to me, to live is Christ and
to die is gain.
