Human Person and

their Environment
Learning Competencies:
1.Notice disorder in the environment.
2.Notice things that are not in their proper place and
organize them in an aesthetic way.
3.Show that care for the environment contributes to
health, well-being an sustainable development.
4.Demonstrate the virtues of prudence and frugality
towards environment.
Reflect:

The belief that a person is a

STEWARD of God’s creation seems
to be just a MYTH today.
•Humans and their environment are
expected to co-exist .
•The environment gives a person his/her
basic needs in life.
•The person, in return, must take care of
the environment and ensure the future
generations of the same benefits.
•However, humans went beyond their
perform, and brought upon environment
problems such as global warming,
acidification, ecological imbalance and
pollution.
•Environmental Ethics – also known as
environmental philosophy
•It deals with the ethical relationship
between a person and his/her
environment.
•It takes into consideration the ethical
responsibilities of a person in as far as
his/her environment is concerned.
•Environmental Ethics/Philosophy
reminds people that all natural beings have
intrinsic value, regardless of their practical
significance to humans – that they must
pay respect to the environment, not
because they benefit from it, but because it
is the right thing to do
Disaster Preparedness
vs.
Protecting the Environment

Disaster Preparedness – combating the

wrath of nature

Protecting the Environment – preserving

the goodness that Nature gives
DISASTERS and DESTRUCTION of
our ENVIRONMENT are
INTERTWINED matters, seemingly
INSEPARABLE from each other.

Destruction of our Environment
• Illegal logging
• Excessive mining
• Rapid urbanization
• Dynamite fishing
• Improper disposal of chemical/waste materials
• Quarrying
• Smoke belching
• Use of hazardous chemicals
Is DISASTER a product of some
PUNISHMENT of GOD and NATURE?
Or was it a result of our OWN neglect
for the environment?
ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE SYSTEMS

• It refers to how a person sees and values

environmental concerns.
• It can be classified into three major
categories:
i. Ecocentrism
ii. Anthropocentrism
iii. Technocentrism
ECOCENTRISM

• natural world has inherent value

• advocate of this view wish to lessen the
impact of human influence to he
environment by reducing and lessening
the consumption of natural resources
2 TYPES OF ECOCENTRISM
• land ethic – focus on human
responsibility towards the natural world
• deep ecology – intensively inquires
about a person’s set of values and
lifestyles that cause serious
environmental problems
ANTHROPOCENTRISM

• puts human needs and interests to be of

highest value and importance
• human-centered
• natural world exists for him/her alone
Cornucopian Point of View

• environmental resources are unlimited

and he rapid increase in human
population does not lead to scarcity in
natural resources
Cornucopian Philosophers

• argue that the possibility of resource

scarcity and population explosion is a
mere exaggeration and they believe that
future technology will be invented and
developed to address such issues
Technocentrism
• technology-centered
• belief that technology can provide
solutions to all environmental problems
• like anthropocentrism, technocentrism
believes that the nature is present to
benefit human beings
