Additive gene action
• Additive gene action means that phenotypic effect of
one gene adds to the phenotypic effect of its own
allele or other gene in the genotype which affects the
expression of the trait.
• A form of allelic interaction in which dominance is
absent.
• In this type of interaction there is no sharp distinction
between the genotypes but many gradations between
the two extremes.
• No heterosis or hybrid vigor
• But heterosis is possible if we cross two different
breeds and then interbred the F1.
(it is called as transgressive segregation)
Non-additive gene action
• Phenotypic expression of one gene
doesn’t necessarily adds to the
phenotypic expression of the other
• But member of allelic pairs may interact
to give a certain phenotypic effect
OR
• Two entirely separate pair of genes may
interact with each other to produce a
particular phenotype
Incomplete dominance (traits are blended like paint)

Neither of the homozygous gene pair is dominant

Heterozygote (Rr) in F1 expresses a different phenotype.

Co-dominance (both the alleles of the genes express
themselves in heterozygous) (occurs in discrete patches)
Over dominance
