Introduction

Biogas is a clean and renewable fuel. It is a type of biofuel produced naturally from
decomposition of organic waste. When organic matter such as food scraps and animal
waste, breakdown in an anaerobic environment they release gas(methane and carbon
dioxide).
Biogas plant
Bio gas plant

Biogas plant is a combination of digester and gas

holder.
There should be an inlet portion in the digester for
the input of organic matter and an outlet portion for
discharging the treated organic material from the
digester.
The biogas produced will be collected in the gas
collector portion of the plant.
How does biogas work?
Biogas systems make use of
a relatively simple , well
known and mature
technology.
Inside the tank , bacteria
convert organic waste into
methane gas through the
process of anaerobic
digestion.
Methane gas produce may
be used for cooking
,lightning, and other energy
needs.
Waste that has been fully
digested exists the biogas
system in the form of
organic fertilizer.

Plant model

Biogas plants are broadly classified based on the

application such as domestic, institutional and
commercial.
These days three category of biogas plant are
available
Batch type
Semi continuous type
Continuous type
Industrial level biogas plant
In these plant biogas produced is being used for production of
electricity and heat.
The purified biogas can be used as fuel for running vehicles and
also a fuel for different industrial application.
Production technology
Advantages
1.Eco-friendly
Biogas is a renewable , as well as clean , source of energy .Gas
generated is non-polluting ;it actually reduces greenhouse effect .
Using gas from waste as a form of energy is actually a great way to
combat global warming.
It is highly sustainable option
2.Biogas generation produces organic fertilizer
the by-product generation process is enrich organic which can
substitute chemical fertilizer
3. It’s a simple and low cost technology that encourages a circular
economy
It is easy to set up and needs little investment .
It creates green job for instance in India 10 millions job were created
mostly in rural areas in plants and in organic waste collection
Disadvantage
1.Few technological advancements.
There are no technology yet to simplify the process and make it
abundant.
Government are not willing to invest in this sector .
2.Contains impurities
After refinement and compression , biogas still contains impurities . If
the generated bio fuel was utilized to power automobiles , it can
corrode the metal parts of the engine
3.Effect of temperature on biogas production
The optimal temperature bacteria need to digest waste is around 37C .
In cold climates , digesters required heat energy to maintain a constant
biogas supply .
4.Less suitable for dens metropolitan areas
Bio gas plants only makes sense where raw material are in plenty full
