FEEDING
MECHANISM
DROP FEED, NEEDLE FEED AND WALKING FOOT
Drop feed
The most common type of feeding mechanism in a home sewing machine (and
some industrial machines) is the drop feed, also known as the regular feed
system.
Basic sewing machine
• FEED TYPE- DROP FEED
• It utilises feed dog underneath the foot to
advance the fabric
• By controlling how the material is fed
through the machine you can control the
direction and length of the stitch by
adjusting the stitch length.
Basic Sewing Machine
• These feed dogs feed the material through a
certain rate.
• If you adjust the stitch length to a smaller
length it doesn’t move the material as much
each time.
• Hence, long stitch length- longer would be
the ditance and material will move faster
and if small stitch length the distance would
be smaller and material will also move
slowly in comparison.

every layer is fed consistently. Drop feed
mechanisms cannot easily transition
between fabric thicknesses. It’s also
difficult to maintain a consistent stitch
length in thick materials because you have
to push the fabric through the machine
Needle feed
Needle feed utilities a feed dog beneath the throat plate that rises up through
the plate, presses the fabric counter to the foot, in combination with the
sewing needle, which is lowered through the fabric and then both the sewing
needle and the feed dog move the fabric by one stitch. Then they separate
and return to their respective original positions for the next stitch formation.
Needle feed sewing machine
There are two types of feed mechanism in
this sewing machine
• Standard drop feed
• Needle( which helps in moving the fabric)
Needle feed

• Unlike normal drop feed
sewing machine, in
needle feed sewing
machine Needle helps in
moving the fabric.
• Feed dogs and needle
both works together as
needle moves down into
the fabric while the feed
dogs move up.
Compound feed/ unison
feed
Often called a compound feed, needle feed or triple feed, this is a two-part
system where the needle moves in tandem with the inner presser foot to pull the
fabric through the machine.
Unison sewing machine
• Unison/ triple feed/ compound sewing
machine

It uses three feeding mechanism

1. Feed dogs

2. Needle

3. Walking foot

Working

• Feed dogs comes up to meet the needle

and the foot.

• Alternating pressure foot holds the

fabric.

• Three of them- needle, walking foot and

drop feed moves together to move the
fabric.

These machines are also known as

compound or triple feed mechanism.

canvas, automotive, marine and leather
sewing trades. A compound walking foot is
especially helpful for leather assemblies of
uniform thickness such as wallets, belts,
holsters and bags.
Walking foot
In this system, the well-defined teeth of both the walking foot and the feed dog
grab and release the fabric from the top and bottom in unison while the needle is
out of the fabric. This method eliminates uneven top and bottom feeding and
reduces puckering because all layers of the fabric assembly are fed consistently
through the machine in one fluid motion.

Triple Feed, Heavy Duty, Single Needle, Drop Feed, Needle Feed, Compound Feed, Alternating (Walking) Presser Feet, Lockstitch Machine
The Consew brand is made in japan and is made by Seiko.
Seiko are making their own machines as well.
Other walking foot machines in the market are:
a. Singer 111
b. Singer 211
c. Juki LU series
Working of the machine
• Often called a compound feed, needle
feed or triple feed, this is a two-part
system where the needle moves in tandem
with the inner presser foot to pull the
fabric through the machine.
• With a compound walking foot, the inner
presser foot and needle walk by moving
up, forward, down and back to feed and
stitch the assembly consistently.
Features
• This machine consists of Mechanical Lubrication.
• It is said that this mechanical lubrication is better
than the automatic lubrications as the kind of work
this machine has to do requires slow machine
running and automatic lubrication needs faster
machine speeds in order to pump the oil to different
parts of the machine.
• This machine has a bigger bobbin which can
constitute around double the amount of thread than
normal Juki and Singer machine bobbins. The uses
of this machine includes larger upholsteries such as
car seats and tents which can consume a lot of
thread therefore the bobbin is larger in size than
usual.
• It has three types of feed mechanisms: Drop feed,
Needle feed and walking foot.
Applications
• For sewing light to heavy-weight materials such
as leather, vinyl, upholstery, synthetics, canvas
and various coated and laminated products.
• Designed for stitching such products as auto,
boat and furniture upholstery, tarpaulins, covers,
sails, tents, camping trailer covers, awnings,
umbrellas, tops, bags, luggage, handbags,
travelware accessories, sports and camping
equipment, wearing apparel, outdoor clothing,
canvas shoes, slippers, orthopedic appliances
etc.
