 What is internet?
• The Internet is a
network of
networks.
• It links computer
to computers.
• The Internet is the
transport vehicles
for the information
stored in other
computer.
• It can be compared to
an international
communication utility
servicing computers.
• It is sometimes
compared to a giant
international
plumbing system.
• The internet doesn’t
contain information
itself. It is we that
upload information
or data on the
internet.
• It is a slight misstatement to say “Documents
were found on the Internet”.
• It would be more correct to say
“Documents were found through or using the
Internet”.
 History of Internet
• The Internet didn’t just happen over night-
rather it was the end result of a research that
had been in place since the late 1950.
• The Internet, originally the ARPAnet
(Advanced Research Project Agency), begin as
a military computer network in 1969.
 Intra net and Internet
Intranet: Networking within an
organization is called Intranet.
e.g; LAN :Local Area Network
Internet: Networking working
internationally is called Internet.
e.g; WAN: Wide Area

• Today, the Internet connects thousands of
networks and hundreds of millions of users
around the world.
• It is a huge, cooperative community with no
central ownership.

 What is WWW ?
• Sometime people use the words Internet and
WWW synonymously but they are different.
• WWW stands for World Wide Web.
• The WWW is a component of the Internet.
• It was created in 1989 at the European
Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva,
Switzerland.
• It presents information in a graphical
interface.
• The basic unit on the Web is the Web
page.
• A Web page has a name or
address.
 How the Web works?
• Web documents can be link together.
• Web uses a special protocol for this
purpose is called HTTP.
• HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer
Protocol.
• HTTP document is a special encoded
file that uses the Hyper Text Markup
Language or HTML.
• A collection of related Web page is
called Web site.
 What is a Web Browser?
• It is a computer programme.
• It enables the computer to view WWW
documents.
•With the help of this we access the
Internet taking advantage of text
formatting, hypertext links, images,
sounds, motions and other feature.
 What is URL?
• URL stands for Universal or uniform
Resource Locator.
• It identifies the location and type of resource
on the Web.
• A URL generally starts with “http”

•It stands for electronic mail.
•More frequently used service on Internet is
electronic mail.
•It is a system for exchanging messages through
computer network.
• E-Mail is less expensive than using
the telephone.
• E-Mail is also a faster way to
communicate than the postal mail.

www.hotmail.com or www.yahoo.com
and sent or receive E-mail free of cost.
 FTP
• FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
• You may transfer files from one computer to
another computer.
• You can download programmes and data files
directly on to your computer through your
web browser.
 Instant

Messaging
•Instant Messaging is also a chat site but it is totally
a private site.
•Limited numbers of invited people can exchange
real time message without any interference.
• You can create the list of those people
whom you want to chat. It is called
buddy list.
• When you are using such service if your
friend is also on line,you can invite them
to chat.
 On line services
• On line services are that services which are
provided by banks, companies, different
agencies and educational institutions etc.
• You may transfer money from your account to
another account.
• You may purchase different things
through your credit card.
• You may sell different things.
• You may get admission in
different courses and get degrees.
