OPA Introduction
 OPA: Optical power adjustment
 Mechanism:
 In the commissioning phase, after the boards work normally, set the r
ated optical power values of OA boards, create the optical cross-conn
ections, and set Power Adjustment Mode to Auto on the U2000.
 After end-to-end optical cross-connections are created, the OPA funct
ion takes the OTU board and optical amplifier board as reference node
s and starts adjustment section by section. The software makes calcul
ations, and the internal variable attenuator of the adjustable board
in the cross-connection path is adjusted automatically.
 The automatic adjustment ensures that the input power of the OTU boar
d and OA board meet the commissioning requirements.

Page43
OPA Introduction
 The OPA function is used at the commissioning phase. The i
mplementation process is as follows :
 Related boards are working normally.
 According to the actual network condition, set the rated input
and output optical power of the optical amplifier board on the
U2000 manually. (Note: The rated input and output optical powe
r of the amplifier units should be set as the nominal per-chan
nel input and output optical power).
 Single station optical cross-connections are accomplished by t
he U2000.
 The system automatically starts the OPA function.

Commissioning Coherent System
 The 40G/100G coherent systems are commissioned in the same way as 10G/40G
systems. But they have some dedicated boards, and also some parameters are
different.
Different Item Guideline
Site OLA Commissioning for OAU106 and RAU boards is added.
commissioning ROADM Commissioning for TM20 and TD20 boards is added.
The typical output optical power of coherent boards is –4 dBm, which is the
OTU boards
same as that of 40G( non-coherent) DQPSK modules.
The incident optical power of the coherent system has a great impact on
Incident optical
transmission performance. Therefore, higher requirements are imposed on the
power
coherent system.
Commissioning
specifications 1. The FEC threshold of 40G and 100G in the coherent system (HD) is 4.5E-3,
that of 100G (SD) is 2E-2; and the FEC threshold in the non-coherent system
is 2E-3.
FEC threshold
2. The BER threshold before FEC of 40G in the coherent system is 8.5E-4.
3. The BER threshold before FEC of 100G in the coherent system (HD) is 7E-4.
4. The BER threshold before FEC of 100G in the coherent system (SD) is 7E-3.

Page51
Commissioning Coherent System
 The differences of commissioning methods
Different Items Guideline
The integral method is used to measure OSNR for the coherent
OSNR
system, or Using the OD/SOM function. The scanning method and
measuring
polarization method do not apply to the coherent system.
Commissioning methods for 1+1 protection in the coherent system
Commis 1+1 protection are the same as those in the non-coherent system. However, there
sioning are no requirements on residual dispersion.
methods Hybrid
Hybrid transmission has a great impact on the coherent system,
transmission
which must be paid attention to.
commissioning
Expansion The coherent system has high requirements on optical power.
commissioning Adjust optical power for expansion using a step of less than 1 dB.

RAU Commissioning
 An RAU is a board integrated with Raman and EDFA, which is
common used in the receiving end. There are two models:

RAU Commissioning
 Precautions for RAU commissioning:
 RAU boards must be used with 14FIU boards and connected to
14FIU boards through SYS ports.14FIU boards support the
filtering function. Precisely detect the optical power in bands to
control gain when RAU boards work in gain lock mode.

Connection to DCM/DCU is not

allowed.

OAU106 Commissioning
 The OAU106 board is an OA of high performance developed
for coherent systems. The structure and specifications of the
OAU106 board are as follows.

OAU106 commissioning: Commissioning rules for the OAU106 board are the same as
those for existing OAUs.
Notes on commissioning for systems with dispersion compensation:
1. In an 80-channel system, the insertion loss between ports TDC and RDC must be less
than 5.5 dB.
2. In a 40-channel system, DCM/DCU is not allowed to be configured between ports TDC
and RDC. The TDC and RDC ports can only be connected directly.

Measuring OSNR Using Integral Metho
d
 For coherent signals with wide optical spectrum, the
traditional scanning method using an OSA or inband po
larization method (EXFO) cannot correctly measure sys
tem OSNR. Therefore, use the integral method to measu
re OSNR of coherent signals.

System Commissioning Specifications
 The system optical power has a great impact on transmissio
n performance of coherent code patterns. Therefore, higher
requirements are imposed on the coherent system.

Rules for Connecting OA and EVOA
 Basic rules for connecting EVOA and OA
 In a system using standard incident optical power, EVOA is configured in front of the IN port on an OA
to adjust the input optical power of the OA at the local site.
 In a system using non-standard incident optical power, EVOA is configured behind the OUT port on an
OA to adjust system incident optical power (to ensure that the incident optical power does not exceed
system requirements) and the input optical power of the downstream OA.
 In a pure 80-channel coherent system using G.652 fibers, the standard incident optical power is used.
In other pure coherent scenarios (including the 40-channel G.652 system), the non-standard incident
optical power is used and EVOA must be configured behind the OUT port on an OA.

 Note: The preceding provides rules for connecting OA and EVOA on the main optical path. Connect OA and EVOA on add/drop tributary
paths by following rules for connecting OA and EVOA in the system using standard incident optical power.

Hybrid Coherent System Commissioning
 Observe the following points during commissioning:
 Hybrid transmission channel spacing: In a hybrid coherent system, channel spacing is
usually increased to reduce the impact of hybrid transmission. You must set the channel
spacing according to design requirements during commissioning.
 Adjacency type: The currently recommended adjacency type is single-side adjacency.
For dual-side adjacency, confirm with design personnel.
 Hybrid coherent systems are sensitive to system incident optical power. Commission
the optical power by strictly following system commissioning requirements. Note that
the optical power of non-coherent signals cannot be too high.
 The impact of hybrid transmission on coherent signals is as follows.

Influence of Hybrid
2.5G 10G 40G ODB 40G eDQPSK
Scenario
40G BPSK High High High Low
100G QPSK High High High Low

 Note: In a G.652 system, impact of hybrid transmission can be ignored when hybrid
transmission channel spacing is larger than 1000 GHz.
