PAST HABIT USING USED TO

Used to meaning:

• Used to refers to actions and situations in the past which

no longer happen or are no longer true. It always refers
to the past.
• In fact, the meaning of used to is not menggunakan, but
it’s more on the past habit or Indonesian you can say
dulunya (kebiasaan/ kegiatan yang dahulu dilakukan
sekarang tidak lagi).
Used to for positive and negative form and examples:

They Didn’t use to
We
I
You

• She used to play a doll = Dia dulunya bermain boneka (we know that she no
longer plays a doll now.
• They didn’t use to know each other = Mereka dulunya tidak saling mengenal
(We know that they know each other now).
Used to for long question form and examples:

Long question:
5W+1H did S Use to + V1
Examples:
- What did you use to do? = Kamu dulu sukanya ngapain aja?
(you don’t do it now anymore)

- Where did you use to have a holiday? = Kamu dulu sukanya liburan kemana aja?
(It states your favorite holiday place you used to have but you don’t like it
anymore)
Used to for short question and answer form and examples:

Short question and answer:

Did S Use to + V1… ? Yes, I did/ No, I didn’t

- A:Did you use to smoke a lot? = Kamu dulu suka ngerokok gak?
(asking about past habit)
B: Yes, I did

- A: Did she use to live here? = Dia dulunya tingga disini gak si?
(asking about past state)
B: No, she didn’t.
Be careful on the word “use” and “used to

• I use this book to find the answer = Saya menggunakan buku ini
untuk menemukan jawabannya.
• I usually use this tool to open the door = Saya biasanya
menggunakan alat ini untuk membuka pintu

So, use in this context is completely different from used to that we

have discussed already
