experience and often trial and error.

Using the Grouping Number Method

To factor trinomials of the form Ax + Bx + C
using the grouping number method:
Example: Factor 5x2 + 7x – 6.

Step 1. Find the grouping number AC.

A=5 C = -6AC = (5)(-6) = -30
Step 2: Find the factors of the grouping
number whose sum is B.

Factors of -30 Sum

30, -1 29
15, -2 13
6, -5 1
Step 3: Use the factors to write Bx as the
sum of two terms.
7x = 10x – 3x
Step 4: Factor by grouping.
5x2 + 7x – 6 = 5x2 + (10x – 3x) – 6
Write the factors whose sum is 7x.
5x2 + 7x – 6 = (5x2 + 10x) + (– 3x - 6)
Regroup the expressions.
5x2 + 7x – 6 = 5x(x + 2) – 3(x + 2)
Factor out the grouped terms in the expressions.
5x2 + 7x – 6 = (x + 2) (5x – 3)
Thus, the factors of 5x2 + 7x – 6 are (x + 2) (5x
– 3).
Factor the following trinomials.
 a) 6x2 – 29x + 35
