Lesson 1: Writing a given number as a product of its prime factors
How do you write a number as a product of its prime factors?
A number greater than 1 which can be divided exactly by 1 and itself is a prime number.
By using the 2 methods, you will determine the product of the given number of its prime
factors?

Example:
Look at the composite number 30 marked at the back of the
jersey of James. What are the factors of 30? The factors 30 are 6
and 5. 5 is a prime number,but 6 is a composite number.We can
still express 6 as a product of prime numbers, as 2x3.
Another set of factors of 30 are 15 and 2. 2 is a prime number,but 15 is a
composite number. We can still express 15 as a product of prime factors as
3x5.
When a composite number can be expressed as a product of prime
factors,we call it prime factorization of the number.

Analyze the problem:

a.What is the number of the jersey?
b.Is it a prime or composite number?
c.What are the prime numbers of 30?
d.What is the used of putting number to the jersey of James?
Here’s how you do it:
Method 1: By Prime factorization using Factor Tree
Step 1:Using number 30.What are the prime factors of 30?
1) 30 2) 30
5x6 15 x 2
2x3 3x5
Prime Factors of 30 are: 2, 3, and 5 Prime Factors of 30 are: 2, 3, and 5
Method 2: By Continuous Division
1) Using the same number 30.What are the prime factors of 30?
2 30
3 15
5

Prime factors of 30 are: 2, 3, and 5
Therefore, prime factorization and continuous division can be used to solve in finding the
number as the product of its prime factors.

Lesson 2: Finding the Common Factor and the Greatest Common Factor(GCF)

How to find common factors and the greatest common factor (GCF)?

To find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is to follow the one of the methods.

ROLITO C. MOLIJON - Teacher III - Canelar Elementary School

3
Method 1:By listing the factors
Method 2:By writing each number as a product of its prime factors.
Method 3:By using the Continuous Division.

Example:
Alvin has 12 bottles of hand soap and Elorde has 18 bottles
hand soap. Each of them will share the hand soap to their
friends. What is the greatest number of hand soap each of
their friends get if Alvin and Elorde will give the same
number of hand soap?

Analyze the problem:

a.What is ask for in the problem? What is the greatest number of hand soap each of
their friends get if Alvin and Elorde will give the same number of hand soap?
b.What facts are given?Alvin has12 bottles of hand soap and Elorde has18 bottles of
hand soap.
c.What is the answer to the problem? 6 hand soap each of their friends receive.
The hand soap that they both receive from their friends is to maintain the cleanliness
of their hands to avoid the infection from the virus.
Here’s how to do it:
Method 1: By listing the factors
Finding the common factors of 12 and 18
12 18
1 x 12 1 x 18
2x6 2x9
3x4 3x6
Factors of 12 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 Factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18
Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
So, the common factors of 12 and 18 are: 1, 2, 3,and 6
Therefore;the greatest common factor of 12 and 18 is 6, since among the
four common factors,6 is the greatest.
Then, the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is 6
Method 2: By writing each number as a product of its prime factors.
Using Factor Tree
12 18
2 x 6 2 x 9
2 x 3 3 x 3
12=2 x 2 x 3 18=2 x 3 x 3
Prime factors of 12 are:2 x 2 x 3
Prime factors of 18 are:2 x 3 x 3
Common Factors of 12 and 18 are:2 and 3
Therefore; multiply 2 x 3 = 6
The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) for 12 and 18 is 6

Problem no.1
Lenny sew a washable face mask. She wants to pack them in
boxes of 8 and 12 pieces. What is the smallest number of pieces
of washable face mask that she can pack using the boxes?
Analyze the problem:
a.What is ask for in the problem? What is the smallest number of pieces of washable
face mask that she can pack using the boxes?
b.What facts are given?boxes of 8 and 12 pieces of washable face mask.
c.What is the answer to the problem? 24 washable face mask can pack using the boxes.
Using washable face mask can save money at the same time it protect us from the virus.
Here’s how to do it:
Method 1: By listing method
Finding the common multiples of 8 and 12.
Write the multiples of 8: - 8, 16, 24,32,40, 48,……
Write the multiples of 12: - 12, 24, 36, 48, 60,…….
The Common Multiples of 8 and 12 are: - 24 and 48
The Least Common Multiple or LCM between 24 and 48 is: 24
Therefore, the Least Common Multiple (LCM) is 24
Method 2: Prime Factorization
Using Factor Tree
8 12
2x4 2 x6
2 x 2 2 x 3

8=2 x 2 x 2 12=2 x 2 x 3
Prime factors of 8 are: 2 x 2 x 2
Prime factors of 12 are: 2 x 2 x 3
List down the common factors including other prime factors like; 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
Multiply them: 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 =24
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) for 8 and 12 is 24
Therefore;the LCM is:24
Method 3:By Continuous Division
2 8 12
2 4 6
2 3

Then, multiply all the prime factors outside except 1: 2 x 2 x 3 x 2=24

4 x 3x2
Therefore; the Least Common Multiple (LCM) is 24
