SOLVING REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS INVOLVING

GCF AND LCM OF 2 GIVEN NUMBERS

I. LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE

Solves real-life problems involving GCF and LCM of 2 given numbers.

(M4NS-IId-70.1)

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

In the previous lesson, you have learned about finding Greatest Common
Factors (GCF) and Least Common Multiples (LCM) of two numbers using different
methods. Those are Listing, Prime Factorization, and Continuous Division Methods.

Today, you are going to apply your skills in finding GCF and LCM of 2 given
numbers in solving real-life word problems. But, before you can solve a word problem,
you need to know first when to use the GCF and LCM. The following Key
words/Phrases will guide on what you will use to solve the problem.

Key Words/Phrases for LCM Key Words/Phrases for GCF

• repetition • grouping
• cycle • split/divide equally/share
• happen at the same time again • share
• smallest/least • no leftovers
• next time • greatest/largest
• every ___ days • biggest
• every___ hours • most
• maximum

Sample Problem #1

Cherry baked 48 pieces of butter and 60 pieces of chocolate cookies. If she will
put the same number of butter and chocolate cookies in each box, what is the greatest
number of each kind of cookies each box will contain?

1
You can use the 4-step plan in solving for the answer.

A. Understand:
What does the problem ask for? - The greatest number of cookies
that a box will contain
What facts are given? - 48 butter cookies, 60 chocolate
cookies
What is/are the key word/s - greatest

B. Plan:
How will you solve the problem? - By finding the Greatest
Common Factor or GCF of 48 and 60

C. Solve:
How is the problem done? - By listing the factors
48 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 48
60 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,10,12,15,20, 30,60
GCF = 12

- By Prime Factorization
48= 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
60= 2 x 2 x 3 x 5
GCF = 2 x 2 x 3 = 12

- By Continuous Division
2 48 60
2 24 30
3 12 15
4 5
GCF = 2 x 2 x 3 = 12

Answer: A box will contain 12 pieces of each kind of cookies.

D. Check and Look Back:

Multiply all the factors of: 48 2 x 2 x 3 x 4 = 48
60 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 60

Sample Problem #2

Joan and John love to buy Banana Cue and Doughnut in the school canteen. But
these foods are not sold at the same time every day. Banana Cues are sold every 2
days while Doughnuts are sold every 3 days. If both are sold today, when will they be
sold together again?

You can use the 4-step plan in solving the problem.

A. Understand:
What does the problem ask for? - The day where banana cues and
doughnuts will be sold together again.

2
What facts are given? - Banana cues are sold every 2 days.
Doughnuts are sold every 3 days.
What is/are the key word/s? - again, every 2 days, every 3 days

B. Plan:
How will you solve the problem? - By finding the Least Common
Multiple or LCM of 2 and 3
C. Solve:
How is the problem done? - By listing the factors
2 = 2, 4 , 6, 8, 10,….
3 = 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, …

LCM = 6

- By Prime Factorization
2 =1x2
3 =1x3

LCM = 2 x 3 = 6

- By Continuous Division
1 2 3
2 3

LCM = 2 x 3 = 6

Answer: Banana cues and doughnuts will be sold together again on the 6th day.

D. Check and Look Back:

Factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, 6
