Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

Target

Numbers are mysterious. In mathematics, numbers are related

to each other in terms of its composition and nature. Factors and
multiples are important basic concepts that you need to master
and to be differentiated by using Prime and Composite Numbers.

In this module, learner demonstrates understanding of factors

and multiples of a given number up to 100 and be able to find
factor pairs for whole numbers and determine if they’re prime or
composite numbers.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

• identify factors of a given number up to 100 M4NS-IIa-64

• identify the multiples of a given number up to 100 M4NS-IIa-
65
• differentiate prime from composite numbers M4NS-IIb-66

Learning Objectives

1. Define factors of a given number.

2. Give the properties of factors of a given number.
3. Identify factors of a given number up to 100.
4. Define multiples of a given number.
5. Identify the multiples of a given number up to 100.
6. Differentiate prime from composite numbers.

Finding the Factors of a Given Number up to 100

A factor is a number that divides the given number without any

remainder.

Factors of a number have a certain number of properties. Given

below are the properties of factors:

• The number of factors of a number is finite.

• A factor of a number is always less than or equal to the
given number.
• Every number except 0 and 1 has at least two factors, 1
and itself.
• Division and multiplication are the operations that are
used in finding the factors.

To find the factors using the multiplication method:

• Write the given number as the product of two numbers in

different possible ways.
• All the numbers that are involved in all these products are
the factors of the given number.

Example1. Which numbers can be multiplied together to get a

product of 24?

• Finding the factors using multiplication method:

• 8 x 3 = 24
• 6 x 4 = 24
• 12 x 2 = 24
• 24 x 1 = 24

The number 24 has 8 factors.

The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.
All the factors are less than or equal to 24.

4
LU_Q2_Mathematics4_Module1
To find the factors of a number using division method:

• Find all the numbers less than or equal to the given

number.
• Divide the given number by each of the numbers.
• The divisors that give the remainder to be 0 are the
factors of the number.

Example 2: Find the factors of 36 by using division method

36 18 12 9
1/ 36 2/36 3/36 4/36
- 36 -2 -3 -36
0 16 06 0
-16 - 6
0 0
All the remainders are 0.
The number 36 have 8 factors.
The factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 18 and 36.
All the factors are less than or equal to 36.

Multiples of a Given Number up to 100

The product of a given number and some other number is called

a multiple of that number or the numbers being multiplied.

All the natural numbers are multiples of 1.

There is no end to multiples of any number. The first ten

multiples of the numbers starting from 1 to 10 are given here.

4 x 1 = 4 4 x 6 = 24
4 x 2 = 8 4 x 7 = 28
4 x 3 = 12 4 x 8 = 32
4 x 4 = 16 4 x 9 = 36
4 x 5 = 20 4 x 10 = 40

What are the multiples of 4?

5
LU_Q2_Mathematics4_Module1
The multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40….
The first 5 multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20.

Multiples are found by multiplying the number by any

whole number. Normally the skip counting or count
by numbers most often called multiples.

Prime and Composite Number

Prime Number is a number which has exactly two

factors, 1 and itself.
Example: 13 is considered prime number because the
only factors that will equal to 13 is 1 x 13.

A Composite Number has more than two factors.

The number of factors determines whether a number is
a prime or composite.
Example: 16 is considered composite because it has two
or more factors that when multiplied together will equal to 16.
1 x 16, 2 x 8, 4 x 4 are equal to 16.
