Let Us Study
Read and situation below. Answer the questions that
follow.

Letty is answering her Math assignment. When she realized

that she did not pay attention to her teacher because she was
talking with her best friend about their favorite television
program. As a result, she did not know how to answer the
problem.

Math Assignment:
Find the missing terms of these number sequence:
1.) 15, 18,21,24___, ____
2.) 60, 52, 46, ___, ____22
3.) 16, 18, 22___36 and ____.
4.) 3, 5, 9, 17, __, ___

1. Who is answering her Math assignment?

2. Why didn’t she know how to answer her assignment?
3. What do you think are the missing terms in no. 1? What
about in no. 2? no. 3? no. 4?
4. Can you help Letty with her assignment?

Read and study the following to help Letty determine the missing
term in the number sentence.

Let us get to know first what a number sequence is. A list of

numbers arranged in a row is called a number sequence. Each
number in the sequence is called a term. To find the missing
term/s in a number sequence, we must first look for its pattern.

4
Step in finding the missing terms in a number sequence:
1. Look for its pattern.
a) Look closely at 15, 18, 21,24___, ____
b) In the number sequence each term is formed by adding
3 to the preceding number.
15+3=18+3=21+3=24 +3=27 + 3=30

So, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and_30.

Rule/Pattern: Add 3 to every term.
2. In a descending or ascending order.
Descending order
a. Look closely at 60, 52, 46, ___, ____22.
b. Get the difference between 60 and 52. So with the
remaining number just do the same to get the result up
to the last digit.22.
60-8=52-8=46-8=38-8=30-8=22.

So, 60, 52, 46, _38, 30_, 22

Rule: Subtract 8 from each term
3. Through multiples of any number.
16, 18, 22___36 and ____.
a) Look closely at the difference of 16 and 18(18-16=2); 18
and 22 (22-18=4).
b) The difference is a multiple of 2. The missing term are
28 and 46. Adding 6 to 22 become 28 and adding 8 to
28 become 36. Adding 10 becomes 46. Hence, 28 and
46 are the missing terms.
16+2=18+4=22+6=28+8=36+10=46

Rule: Add the multiples of 2 to each term

5
4. Through number sequence.
Get the difference of the consecutive terms Take note that as
the number increases, the difference is multiplied by the
common factor of each term which is 2.
3, 5, 9, 17, 33, 65

2 4 8 16 32
To find the missing terms, multiply the preceding
difference by 2 and then add the product to the current term
to obtain the next term.
8x2=16 17+16=33 is the fifth number
16x2=32 33+32=65 is the sixth number
Rule: Get the difference of the consecutive terms. The
difference is multiplied by common factor which
is 2 and add the product to the current term to
get the next term.

Let Us Reflect
Patterns and sequences in real life can be very useful. We
use pattern/ sequence recognition technique consciously and
unconsciously in our daily life activities. Just like when we read a
story, write a letter, sing a song, draw something and even when
we try to solve everyday problems. We follow certain patterns or
sequences in achieving our goals in life.

4. 1 x ___ = 10
5. 2 x (3+4) = (___x3) + (2 x ___)

11
Let Us Study
Let’s Get Started!
Study the real-life situation:
Roxel is tasked to find the missing numbers in the following
equations. He had already tried to find the missing numbers for
almost an hour but still he cannot find it.
1) 4 x 5 = ___x 4
2) 6+(12+17)= (6+12)+___
3) 0 x 9 = ____
4) 1 x ____ = 10
5) 2 x (15 +20) = (____ x 15) + (2 x ___)

Who is assigned to do the work?

What is the task of Roxel?
What can we do to help him?

To help Roxel in his assigned task, let us study this!

EQUATION is a mathematical sentence that states equality of
two expressions separated by an equal sign.
Examples of Equations:
48+ 23 = 71 5 x 45 = 22
The Properties of Operations help us find the missing numbers in
an equation. We can evaluate an equation by performing the
operations in each expression.
Properties of Operations
1. Commutative Property of Addition/ Multiplication states
that changing the order of the addends or the factors does not
affect the answer.
a. Example in Addition : a + b = b+ a
12+ 17 = 17 +12
29 = 29
b. Example in Multiplication : a x b = b x a
4x5=5x4
20 = 20

12
2. Associative Property of Addition/ Multiplication states that
changing the groupings of the addends or the factors does not
affect the answer.
a. Example in Addition: 5 + (3+4) = (5+3) +4
5 +7 =8+4
12 = 12
b. Example in Multiplication: 2 x (2 x 3) = (2x2) x 3
2x6=4x3
12 = 12
3. Zero Property of Multiplication states that any factors that is
multiplied by 0 the answer is always zero.
Ex. 0 x 9 = 0
4. Identity Property
a. Identity Property of Addition states that any number that
is added to 0 the answer is the number itself.
Ex. 0 + 6 = 6
b. Identity Property of Multiplication states that any number
that is multiplied to 1 the answer is the number.
Ex. 1 x 10 = 10
5. Distributive Property of Multiplication Over Addition says
that we have to multiply each number in the sum by the number
outside the parentheses, then add the products together.
Ex. 2 x (15 +20) = ( 2 x 15) + (2 x 20 )
2 x 35 = 30 + 40
70 = 70
In solving math equation, you can supply the correct missing
number by remembering the rules of the properties of operation.

13
Can you help Roxel solve the equation now?
What are the answers to the given equations?

1) 4 x 5 = 5 x 4 (using commutative property of

multiplication)
2) 6+(12+17) = (6 +12)+ 17 (associative property of addition)
3) 0 x 9 = 0 ( zero property of multiplication)
4) 1 x 10 = 10 (identity property of multiplication)
5) 2 x (15 +20) = ( 2 x 15) + (2 x 20) ( Distributive Property of
Multiplication Over Addition

Good job!

Let Us Practice
Identify the property of operation being described in each
number.

1. States that changing the order of the addends factors does

not affect the answer. (5 + 4 = 4+ 5)
2. States that changing the groupings of the factors does not
affect the answer. 3 x (2x5) = (3x2) x5
3. States that any factor multiplied by 0 the answer is always
zero. 20 x 0 = 0
4. States that any number that is added to 0 the answer is the
number itself. 0 + 50 = 50
5. States that multiply each number in the sum by the number
outside the parentheses, then add the products together. 3
x (4 +5) = (3 x 4) + (3 x 5)

14
Let Us Practice More
Now, let’s move on….
“LET- ME- IN”
Direction: Supply the missing number on the following
equations. Use the hints provided.
1. (4 +__) + 20 = __ + (3 + 20) (associative)
2. 3 x (6 +10) = (___x 6) + (3 x __) (distributive)
3. 1 x 0 = ____ (zero property of multiplication)
4. 6 x ___ = 5 x ___ (commutative)
5. (4x ___) x 5 = ___ x (2x5) (associative)

Let Us Remember
An equation is a mathematical sentence that states equality
of two expressions separated by an equal sign. The properties of
operation help us find the missing numbers in an equation. You
can evaluate an equation by performing the operations in each
expression.
With this knowledge, you will not be ignorant in facing the
realities in your lives.
