Lesson 1 – Relating Triangles to Quadrilaterals

Let Us Learn
Hi kids! It is another wonderful day! Do you still
remember the different kinds of triangle and quadrilateral?
Oh yes, I know you loved these lessons. Do you want to
discuss these again? Yeah! I will teach more about triangles
and quadrilaterals. Are you excited? Common! Get your
pencil, protractor, crayons, graphing paper, pencil and
eraser. Are you ready? Today, you will know how triangles
and quadrilaterals are related to each other. (M4GE-IIId-
18.1).
There are directions given in every activity. So, kindly
read it carefully, understand and follow. Good Luck!

Let Us Try
Color the triangle with Red and quadrilateral with Blue.
Do this in your answer sheet.

Let Us Study

Read the situation in a box. Answer the questions below.

Maria loves to help her mother in the household chores.

One day, Mother told her to fold the dried clothes from
laundry. When she holds the handkerchief, she remembers
her lesson about polygons. She will fold the handkerchief in
other way. She thinks to start folding it on this way.

A B C

What kind of a girl is Maria? Why?

What shape did she create from folding the square diagonally?
She produced triangular pieces from a square.
She thought she could also make triangular pieces in a
rectangle and trapezoid too.

So, from quadrilaterals we can make triangles.

Lesson 2 – Relating One Quadrilateral to Another
Quadrilateral
Let Us Learn
Hello dear! It’s another brand new day! You had already
learned about the relationship between triangle and quadrilateral.
Have you done it well? Try to recall about different kinds of
quadrilaterals because today, we are going to relate one
quadrilateral to another quadrilateral. (Relates one quadrilateral
to another quadrilateral (e.g. square to rhombus). (M4GEIIId-
18.2).
Does it sound exciting? Exactly! So prepare yourself and
start exploring more interesting activities. Just read and follow
instructions carefully and have fun while learning. Good Luck!

Let Us Try
Match the kinds of quadrilateral in Column A with its
corresponding figures in Column B. Write the letter of the
correct answer on the blank provided.

__ 1. Parallelogram a.

__ 2. Rhombus b.

__ 3. Trapezoid c.

__ 4. Rectangle d.

__ 5. Square e.

Let Us Study
Read the situation in the box.

BJ was one of the boys who were assigned during the

flag retreat. While they were folding, he noticed that the flag
has four sides and four corners and it is a rectangle. Then,
he carried the Philippine flag respectfully. Do you also show
respect to our national flag?
Look at the Philippine flag and answer the questions:

What is the shape of our Philippine flag?

Aside from a rectangle, what other four-sided shape found in the
flag?
What are rectangle and trapezoid have in common?
How many sides and vertices do they have?
Do they have the same total angle measure?
Kindly name other figures with 4 sides, 4angles and 4 vertices?
What do we call a figure with 4 sides, 4 angles and 4 vertices?

Look at figures and complete the statement below.

Figure 1

This is _____________. This is _____________.

It has _____ congruent sides. It has _____ congruent sides.
It has _____ vertices/corners. It has _____ vertices/corners.
It has _____ right angles. It has _____ right angles.

11
What are their common characteristics? How are they related?
The square and the rhombus are related. Both have four
corners and congruent sides. They are both parallelograms.

Figure 2
This is ________________. This is ________________.
It has _____pairs of parallel It has _____pairs of parallel
and equal opposite sides. and equal opposite sides.
It has a total angle measure It has a total angle measure of
of ____. of ____.

What are their common characteristics?

The rectangle and parallelogram are related. Both have 2 pairs of
parallel sides. They have four sides and four angles and four
vertices.

Let Us Practice
Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is
incorrect.
1. Parallelograms are quadrilaterals with opposite sides
parallel.
2. Quadrilaterals have four angles.
3. Square, rectangle and rhombus are parallelograms.
4. Square and rhombus have equal sides.
5. Rectangle and square have acute angles.

12
Let Us Practice More
Study the figures. Fill in the table below with check (√) if
this characteristic is found in this figure and cross (X) if
not found. Then complete the sentence below.

Square and rhombus are related because ______________________.

Rectangle and parallelogram are related because _______________.
Square and rectangle are related because ______________________.
Rectangle and Trapezoid are related because ___________________.
Quadrilaterals are related to each other because _______________.

Let Us Remember
A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides, four angles and
four vertices. It can be classified as a square, rectangle,
parallelogram, trapezoid, and rhombus.
Square and rhombus have both 4 vertices, 4 equal sides and
2 pairs of parallel lines. They are parallelogram.
13
The opposite sides of rectangle and parallelogram are both
parallel and equal in length. They are both have 4 sides and
vertices. They are also parallelogram.
Trapezoid like the other quadrilaterals has also 4 sides and
4 vertices.
Quadrilaterals are related to each other in some
characteristics.

Let Us Assess
Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in your
answer sheet.

without overlapping each other. Use your graphing paper.

15
Let Us Reflect

There are many different kinds of quadrilaterals but not all

have several things in common. Some their common properties:
all of them have four sides, have two diagonals and the sum of
the interior angles equals 360 degrees.
Remember that a parallelogram has two parallel pairs of
opposite sides. A rectangle has two pairs of opposite sides
parallel, and four right angles. It is also a parallelogram, since it
has two pairs of parallel sides. A square has two pairs of parallel
sides, four right angles, and all four sides are equal. It is also a
rectangle and a parallelogram. A rhombus is defined as a
parallelogram with four equal sides. Is a rhombus always a
rectangle? No, because a rhombus does not have to have 4 right
angles. Trapezoids only have one pair of parallel sides. It's a type
of quadrilateral that is not a parallelogram.
