This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.

LESSON
Interior angles are angles found inside any polygon. These angles are formed
by the intersection of two sides of the polygon. In the given example below, M, N
and P are the interior angles of MNP.
LET’S DISCOVER!
In the activity, the three corners of the triangle formed a straight angle when
put together. The representation shows that the interior angles of a triangle form
180°.
Polygons are made up of several triangles. You can divide a polygon into
triangles by drawing diagonal(s) from any vertex of a polygon. For example, a
quadrilateral can be divided into two triangles and a pentagon can be divided into
three triangles.
Since every polygon is made up of several triangles, and the sum of the interior
angles of a triangle is 180°, you can now generalize a rule for the sum of the interior
angles of any polygon.
Number of
Number of sides Sum of the
Polygon Triangles Formed
(n) Interior Angles
(n - 2)
3 1 180°
4 2 2 · 180° = 360°
5 3 3 · 180° = 540°
6 4 4 · 180° = 720°
As you can observe in the table, the sum of the interior angles of a polygon is
equal to 180° times the number of triangles that can be drawn from one vertex of the
polygon. Furthermore, notice that the number of triangles that can be drawn from a
polygon is 2 less than the number of sides.
Therefore, to find the sum of the interior angles of a polygon, we can use the
formula:
Sn = (n – 2) 180°
where:
Sn = the sum of the interior angles of a polygon with n sides; and
n = the number of sides of the polygon
EXAMPLES:
Do what is asked.
1. Find the sum of the interior angles of the following polygons:
a. heptagon b. octagon
2. Find the measure of each interior angle of the following regular polygons:
a. square b. pentagon
3. Find the unknown angle of the following convex polygons.
a. b.
Solutions:
1. To find the sum of the interior angles of a polygon, use the formula:
Sn = (n – 2) 180°.
Thus, the sum of the interior angles Thus, the sum of the interior angles of
of a heptagon is 900°. an octagon is 1,080°.
a. The sum of the interior angles of b. The sum of the interior angles of
a square is 360° and it has 4 sides. a pentagon is 540° and it has 5 sides.
360° 540°
I.A. = I.A. =
4 5
= 90° = 108°
Thus, the measure of each interior Thus, the measure of each interior
angles of a square is 90°. angles of a pentagon is 108°.
a. The sum of the interior angles of b. The sum of the interior angles of
a triangle is 180°. a quadrilateral is 360°.
