This document is a mathematics lesson on statistics for 7th grade students. It introduces statistics and defines statistical and non-statistical problems. Examples of each are provided. Students are asked to determine which questions require collecting multiple data points and have variability to be considered statistical problems. The lesson also introduces statistical instruments like surveys and questionnaires and has students practice formulating a simple survey from a sample statistical problem.

(M7SP- IVa-3) ➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Mathematics 7 Learner’s Material ⮚ Chapter: 37 Pages: 238-239 Topic: Introduction to Statistics ⮚ Objectives: 1. To pose real-life problems that can be solved by Statistics. 2. To formulate simple statistical instruments.
Let Us Discover
This Simplified Self-learning Module (SSLM) introduces you on how to
determine problems that are statistical and nonstatistical. This will help you pose problems that can be solved using Statistics and develop you on how to formulate simple statistical instruments. To start with, let us first define the terms related to this topic.
Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, presentation, analysis,
and interpretation of data. It deals with all aspects, including the planning of data collection, design of surveys and experiments.
Statistical problem is a problem that can be answered by collecting data that
varies. This is dissected and carried out by first gathering facts and data analysis related to the process. There are three types of statistical problems. These are summarizing problems, comparing problems and relationship problems.
Statistical instrument is any process that aims at describing a phenomenon
by using an instrument or device however the results may be used as a control tool. Examples of statistical instruments are questionnaire and surveys sampling.

Let Us Try
Let us now determine if the given problem is statistical or nonstatistical so that
you can pose problems that can be solved using Statistics. Which of the following questions is/are an example/s of a statistical problem? 1. How old are you now? 2. What are the ages of your family members? 3. How tall are you? 4. How tall are the students in your class, in centimeters? 5. How many times did you dine at Jollibee Calumpang? 6. What is the most preferred learning modality of Grade 7 students of General Santos City? Answer: 1. What are the ages of your family members? 2. How tall are the students in your class, in centimeters? 3. What is the most preferred learning modality of Grade 7 students of General Santos City? Reasons: 1. The questions require gathering or collecting more than one piece of data. 2. There would be a variability of data. From the statistical questions or problems given above, we can also formulate a simple statistical instrument to gather data. Let us try, Example Problem: What is the most preferred learning modality of Grade 7 students of General Santos City?
Address: _________________________________ Age: __________ Mode of Transportation: ______________________ Number of Household Members: _______________ Household Member that can provide instructional support: _______________ Devices available at home for learning: ______________________________ Do you have an internet connection? _____________________ How can you connect to the internet? _____________________ What distance learning modality do you prefer? _________________

Let Us Do
Activity 1: Know Me!
Direction: Write S on the blank if the problem is statistical and NS if not.
_______1. What do the teachers prefer to eat during recess time?
_______2. How long does Gerald Anderson play basketball? _______3. What time did the Grade 7 students in this class wake up in the morning? _______4. What is the typical number of pets owned by selected families in General Santos City? _______5. When was Shamcey Supsup crowned as Binibining Pilipinas? _______6. What is the typical cost of tuna (per kilo)? _______7. How many championship belts does Manny Pacquiao achieve? _______8. How far is the airport from the fishport? _______9. What is the average number of male students per class in Grade 7? _______10. How many siblings does Melai Cantiveros have?
Activity 2: Choose Me!
Direction: The words enclosed in the table below are the data that can be used in conducting a survey. Check the word/s that is/are necessary to use.
Situation: The Supreme Student Government will conduct a Virtual Oath-taking
Ceremony of all club and organization officers. The SSG Adviser tasked the officers to get the number of attendees who will participate in the said online activity for reservations. Which of the following data are needed for this survey?
Name Age Sex Height Weight
Grade Level Section Civil Status Religion Club Name
Let Us Apply
Activity 3: Pose and Form it Yourself!
Directions: Pose 5 problems that can be solved using Statistics in your day-to-day activities. From those five problems, choose one problem to solve, then formulate a simple statistical instrument to use. Write your answer on a separate sheet.
