Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

Prayer

(Ask a pupil to lead the prayer) (The pupils will stand and pray.)

Good afternoon Grade 5! Good afternoon, Sir!

Tap your seatmate and say, “Good afternoon, let us

learn together!”
(The pupils will greet their
classmates.)

Checking of Attendance

Is there any absentee for today? None Sir!

Very Good!

Review/Drill

Let’s have a review of our past lesson.

(The teacher will show illustrations of pictures)
Class, what do you call this device that can measure
the hotness or coldness of an object? Thermometer Sir.

Good job! Now, I have five digital thermometers on

the board and I want you to help me match the
temperature indicated in each thermometer to the
different objects posted on the board.

Are you ready Grade 5? Yes sir!

Who will help me on this activity? (The pupils will raise their hands
and participate.)
Sample illustrations:

Thank you class for helping me in this activity. So,

what is now our past lesson all about? It’s all about temperature, Sir.

2
Excellent! And what is temperature? The hotness or coldness of an
object.

Motivation

Class? Do you know the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little

Star”? Yes Sir.

Good! We will be using the tune of this nursery rhyme

in singing the song that tells about our lesson for
today.
Now it’s time to have a warm up for us to become
mentally and physically alert. Let us all stand and sing
a song.

(The teacher will post the lyrics of the song on the

board and let the pupils read the lyrics first) (The pupils will read the lyrics first,
and then they will follow the
Data, Data teacher in singing the song).
Data, Data What are you?

We collect you, oh It’s true.

ORGANIZE you that’s my plan

ANALYZE to understand

Data, Data what are you?

INTERPRET you right on cue

(Repeat 2x)

Did you enjoy the song class? Yes, Sir.

Can you give me words from the song that you

learned?
Yes, Sir.

Very Good!

Did you know that these words are all related to our
topic for today? (The teacher will show a graphic
organizer on the screen ) Really, Sir?
Yes! Look at this graphic organizer. Because all of the
words that you said are connected to statistics. Do
you know now what statistics is? No, Sir.
Ok then, for you to learn more about the basic of
statistics. I will help you. But before that I will first ask
3
you about your favorite sports. (The pupils will listen)

A. Presentation

(The teacher will show a big table about the favorite

sports of the Grade 5 pupils) (The pupils will observe the table)

What do you see on the table? Different sports, Sir.

Correct! So, your task now is to go in front one by

one. You need to choose your favorite sports and put
your tally on the table.

For us to be more alive, we will sing the song “Data,

Data” while doing this activity until the last pupil puts
his/her vote. (The pupils will listen to the
instructions)
Are you ready?
Yes Sir!
(The pupils will all participate on
the activity)
At this point class, we already collected your answers
to the question: what is your favorite sport?

You all deserve a “nice one clap”!!! The pupils will do the clap.

Did you know class that we’re already doing statistics

now?

B. Discussion

(The teacher will show a power point presentation of

the lesson)

Every one, kindly read the definition of statistics. Statistics is about collecting
information or data. It is a branch
of mathematics dealing with
collecting, organizing, analyzing
4
and interpreting of data.

Did you know that all the things that you can see on
the table, especially your answers are called data?
Data are facts collected together
Can anyone read what a data is? for reference or analysis.

Exactly! Let us now go back to the table on the board. (The pupil will point the data on
Can somebody point the data on the table? the table)

By survey method.
Good job! How did we collect the data a while ago?

Very good! Conducting surveys and using

questionnaires are used to collect pieces of
information or data.

But did you know that there are two types of data?
Okay let me help you identify them. The first one is
describe using words such as “favorite games” or Category data Sir.
“favorites sports.” Any idea? Categorical data Sir.

Yes, Sir!
Correct! Are you ready for the other type of data?
This type of data is describe using numbers such as
“number of participants” or “test scores.” Numerical data, Sir.
What do you call this data? Discrete data, Sir.

You are both correct! Numerical or discrete data is

describe using numbers.
(The pupils will do the activity)
Now, I will divide the class into two. The left side will
be the categorical data and the right side will be the
numerical data. All you need to do is to identify the
data that I will flash on the screen. If your group thinks
that it is a numerical or categorical data, just stand Yes Sir!
and shout the type of data. Are you ready?

Sample data: Categorical data.

1. Favorite hobby of Grade 5 pupils. Numerical data.
2. The number of enrollees for this school year

Now that you know about the types of data or

variables, it is now time for us to organize the data
that we have collected. How did we organize the data By counting them.
in the table? By making a table.
By grouping the favorite sports.

All your answers are correct! One way of organizing a

data is by making a table. And this table will have
different parts. Can anyone tell me what do you see Title of the table.
on the table? What do you think are the parts of it? Tally of the scores.
Frequency.

Excellent! Can anyone tell me what the title of the Favorite Sports of Grade 5 pupils.

5
table is? Or what is the data all about?

Very good! What can you say about the tally and the We count the tally then we will put
frequency? the total number in the frequency.

Good job! Okay then, will you help me now find out Yes, Sir!
the frequency of each category on the table? (The pupils will help the teacher in
counting the tally and put the total
number of scores in the
frequency)

You are all very good in counting. But, we still need to

answer questions about the table. How can we
answer these questions? What are we going to do
with the data? We collected, then organized them in a We need to analyze and interpret
tabular form…what do you think are the next steps? the data Sir.

Very good! We can able to answer the following

questions if we will analyze and interpret the data on
the table.

Let us now answer the following questions:

1. How many pupils like swimming?_____

(The pupils will answer the
2. What sports is the most favorite of the Grade 5
questions orally, with the guide of
pupil? ______
the teacher)
3. What sports is the least favorite of the Grade 5
pupils? ______
4. How many pupils like basketball than volleyball?
5. How many pupils participated in the survey? ____

C. Values Integration

Ok class, I just want you to remember that whenever

you play your favorite game or sports you need to be
fair and show sportsmanship.
Yes Sir. So that we can avoid
Do you agree? Why? misunderstandings and fights.

Very good!

What do you think is the importance of collecting It can help us predict.

information about something? It can help us in decision-making.
It can help us discover things.

Excellent!

D. Fixing Skills

Class, for me to know if you really understand the

lesson I want you to listen and take down notes for
the video that I will show you. This video is a
collection of the answers of the pupils about their Yes Sir!
favorite subject. Are you excited?
6
Good! All you need to do is fill-out the table that I will
give you. You need to get the tally and frequency of
the data. For you to do that properly, what do you
need to do while watching?
Listen and be quiet.
Correct! So afterwards, we will check if your tally and
frequency are correct. Ready?
Yes Sir!
(The teacher will play the video)
(The pupils will watch attentively)
E. Generalization

Did you enjoy all the activities for today?

What did you learned? Yes Sir.
What did you learned about statistics? I learned about statistics.
Statistics involves collecting,
organizing, analyzing and

the two types of data and their differences?
Yes Sir. The first one is
categorical which describe by
words and the discrete data which
describe numbers.
Very good!

F. Application

Before we proceed to another activity, you may ask

question if you have any.
Was everything clear to you?

Group Activity Yes, Sir.

Excellent! Now that you know how to collect or

gather, analyze and organize data, I will group you
into five (5). And each group will form a circle and
need to choose their leader. Here are the instructions
for this group activity.

What are you going to do?

1. The leader will pick an envelope which contains Listen to the instructions, Sir.
different collected data.
2. Altogether, the group will analyze and organize
the data that they have picked.
3. Each group will be given materials to do the
activity.
4. The time allotment in doing this activity is for 5-
10mins only.
