Triangle.
You got it right!
Let’s have first a review on parts of a triangle. Let
us identify the parts of ∆BET

“ The parts of a triangle are angles and sides

What are the parts of a triangle? Specifically there are three sides and three
angles”

Exactly! You are on the right track!

The three sides of ∆BET are namely BE, ET,
Can you name the sides of ∆BET? and TB.

Absolutely Correct!

How about the angles of ∆BET? The three angles of ∆BET are namely ∠B,
∠E and ∠T
Excellent!
C. Motivation

what do they have in common? They are build using triangles.

Great Job!

“Why do you think bridges and buildings are build

using triangles?”

What mathematical concept may justify the triangular

designs that they use?

The answers to these questions are revealed in this

lesson.
D. Presentation of the Lesson

There are various theorems on triangle

inequalities. These theorems can be illustrated in
one triangle and in two triangles. The most
commonly used theorems in one Triangle are
Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem.
and this will be our lesson for today.

Here are our learning targets:

1. identify different parts of a triangle;
2. define the key words in Exterior Inequality
Theorem
3. Illustrate triangle Inequality: Exterior
Inequality theorem
4. Recognize the importance of exterior
inequality theorem in solving real-life problem
E. Lesson Proper
Before we discuss the Exterior Angle Inequality
theorem, let us first define exterior angle, Remote
interior angle and other key terms using the figure
below, because we will use these concepts as we go
through in this inequality for you to easily understand
on what is Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem.

I have here a given triangle

A triangle has three interior angles.

What does it mean when we say interior angles?

Interior angles- these are the angles inside

So, what are the three interior angles in the given the triangle.
triangle?

∠1, ∠2 and ∠3.

Exactly! Very Good!

Take note that we always have three interior angles

for every triangle.
Now, what do we mean by Exterior Angle of a An Exterior Angle of triangle is an angle
triangle? which forms a linear pair (adjacent) with one
of the triangle’s interior angles.

When we say exterior angles, these are the angles

outside the triangle and it formed when we try to
extend the sides of our triangle.
Looking into our triangle it has nine angles formed but
which angles is the exterior angles?

Base in the definition of our exterior angle of a

triangle it should be forms a linear pair or adjacent
with one of the Triangle’s interior angles.

When we say adjacent, they must have a common

vertex and they must be a linear pair (common side)

Let us name all the exterior angles of ∠1, ∠2 and ∠3

∠1: ∠4 and ∠5
∠2: ∠6 and ∠7
∠3: ∠8 and ∠9
Now, the angle that is not exterior angle is what we
call vertical angle

Vertical Angles- either of a pair of angles that have

the same vertex and are on opposite sides of two
intersecting straight lines.

Therefore: ∠4 and ∠5, ∠6 and ∠7, and ∠8 and ∠9 are

also vertical angles.
Next, what do we mean by Remote Interior angles? Remote Interior angles are two interior
angles not adjacent to the exterior angles.
Now, let us name all the remote interior angles of the
given triangle. ∠5: ∠2 and ∠3
∠9: ∠1 and ∠2
∠7: ∠1 and ∠3
Very Good!

I have here a given triangle with a given measurement.

Now, let
us try to answer the following questions.

Fill in the blank:

1. Name all the exterior angles.

1. ∠5, ∠, ∠6, ∠8, ∠4, and ∠12

2. Name all the interior angles. 2. ∠1, ∠2, and ∠3
3. What are the remote interior of ∠5? 3. ∠2 and ∠3
4. What is the adjacent interior angle of ∠4? 4. ∠3
5. m∠3?

For us to find the measurement of ∠3.

Take a look in the given triangle.
∠3 and ∠12 are formed with linear pair therefore they
are supplementary angles and the sum of their
measurement is equal to 180o
If the measure of ∠12 = 125 o , then what will be the
measurement of ∠3? 5. 55o

6. m∠2

For us to find the measurement of ∠2. Always

remember the Triangle sum Theorem. The sum
of the interior angles of a triangle must be
180o.
If ∠1 = 68o and ∠3 = 55o, what will be the 6. 57o
measurement of ∠2 to become 180o
7. m∠7
∠7 and ∠1 are formed with linear pair therefore they
are supplementary angles and the sum of their
measurement is equal to 180o
If the measure of ∠1 = 68o, then what will be the
measurement of ∠7?
7. 112o
8. m∠4
∠4 are adjacent to ∠3. Therefore, 180o - 55o 8. 125o

9. m∠8
∠2 are also adjacent to ∠8. Therefore, 180o -57o 9. 123o
10. m∠9
Since ∠9 is vertical to ∠1.
Always remember that vertical angles are
congruent. 10. 68o
If m∠1 = 68o then, m∠9 are also
Very Good!

Now, let’s try to observe one of the exterior

angles and its remote interior angles.
Given the ∠12 as exterior angle and its remote interior
angle which ∠1 and ∠2

∠12 : ∠1 and ∠2
125o = 68o 57o

Try to look at the given measure. What did you

notice?
Exterior angle is equal to the sum of its
remote interior angle

Exactly! Excellent!
Now, to get the measurement of ∠6 we will add the
remote interior angles which is m∠1 = 68o and m∠3 =
55o is equal to 123o

Always remember that the measure of an exterior

angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the measure
of the two remote interior angles.

Now, what is the relationship of these concepts in

Exterior Inequality theorem?

Take a look in the another given triangle with three

given angles and its measurements.
I want you to identify the Exterior Angles and its Exterior Remote Interior Angles
remote Interior Angles. Angles
∠4 ∠2 ∠3
∠5 ∠2 ∠3
∠6 ∠1 ∠3
∠7 ∠1 ∠3
∠8 ∠1 ∠2
∠9 ∠1 ∠2
Very Good!
Now, let’s give the measures of these angles. Exterior Remote Interior Angles
Angles
∠4 = 105o ∠2 = 60o ∠3 = 45o
∠5 = 105o ∠2 = 60o ∠3 = 45o
∠6 = 120o ∠1 = 75o ∠3 = 45o
∠7 = 120o ∠1 = 75o ∠3 = 45o
∠8 = 135o ∠1 = 75o ∠2 = 60o
∠9 = 135o ∠1 = 75o ∠2 = 160o

Given by the measure of the angle from our figure. I

want you to compare the exterior angle and one of its
remote interior angles. What did you notice?
 Exterior angle > one of its remote
interior angle.

 The measure of an exterior angle is

equal to the sum of the measure of its
two remote interior angle.

Excellent!
In addition, for any remote interior angle of a triangle
< exterior angle.

Therefore, we can say that the measure of an exterior

angle is always greater than the measure of any of the
two remote interior angles in a triangle.

 The measure of an exterior angle is equal to the sum

of the measure of its two remote interior angle.

And that is the Exterior Angle inequality Theorem.

Try to read again on what is Exterior Angle Inequality Exterior Angles Inequality Theorem - the
Theorem. measure of an exterior angle is always
greater than the measure of any of the two
remote interior angles in a triangle.

For any triangle, the measure of an exterior

is equal to the sum of the measure of its two
remote interior angles.
Let’s have an example!
1. Find the value of x using the following
triangle.
By using the exterior inequality theorem Solutions:

∠x is the exterior angle

∠x +92 =180o (linear pair of angles)
∠ x=180−92=88

Applying the exterior angle theorem, we get,

∠ y + 41=88

∠ y=88−41=47

Therefore, the values of x = 88o and y = 47o

2. Find the value of x.

Solutions:
∠MED = ∠C + ∠D
11 x−10=6 x+11+39
11 x−10=6 x+50
11 x−6 x=50+10
5 x=60
x=12

Therefore, the value of exterior angle ∠MED

= 122

∠C = 83
Remote interior Angles
∠C+ ∠D = 122

Nice work class!

Problem 1.
In the map below, the location forms a triangle. Dina,
a student, is at home while Alvin her classmate is at
school. In this situation, answer the questions that

follow.

Questions:
1. Who is the farther from church given their
locations, Dina or Alvin?
2. Given the same time started and same rate of
walking, who among the two can arrive at the
Market first?
3. If a new road will be constructed connecting
the School and the Market, is the constructed
road longer than the road between Home and
Church? What triangle inequality theorem is
applied in this situation?

F. Application

I want you to group yourselves into 5.

Every group will measure the given triangles, compare
and answer the following questions.

G. Generalization
Again, what is Interior Angles These are the angles inside the triangle.

Correct! Good Job!

How about Exterior Angle of triangle? These are the angles outside the triangle
which forms a linear pair (adjacent) with one
of the triangle’s interior angles.
Absolutely Correct!
How about Remote Interior Angle of triangle? These are two interior angles not adjacent to
the exterior angles
Excellent Answer!
