Corresponding Parts of
Lesson

1 Congruent Triangles
What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

o recall the triangle congruence postulates;
o identify the corresponding parts of congruent triangles; and
o solve for the corresponding parts of congruent triangles.

What’s In

Let’s recall the definition of the different triangle postulates.

TRIANGLE POSTULATES

SAS (Side – Angle – Side) Congruence Postulate

If the two sides and an included angle of one triangle are congruent to
the corresponding two sides and the included angle of another triangle, then
the triangles are congruent.

ASA (Angle-Side-Angle) Congruence Postulate

If the two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent
to the corresponding two angles and an included side of another triangle,
then the triangles are congruent.

SSS (Side-Side-Side) Congruence Postulate

If the three sides of one triangle are congruent to the three sides of
another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.

What’s New

TRY THIS!
1. Look for any parallelogram shape furniture or object in your house, it could be
your table, picture frame or any.
2. Using a ruler, create an imaginary diagonal line from the vertex of the side of the
furniture or object going to the opposite side’s vertex. You are expected to follow this
shape. A B

D C

13
3. You will be able to have 2 triangles, based on the shape created, label the two
triangles, the first triangle is ABC and the second triangle is CDA, and measure
the sides of the two triangles and answer the following questions.
a. What is the measurement of the following sides?
Segment AD? Segment BC?
Segment AB? Segment CD?
Segment AC?
b. Do they have the same measurement? Why do you say so?
c. Is triangle ABC congruent to triangle CDA? Why do you say so?

Based on the activity, you were able to find out the triangle ABC and triangle CDA
have the same measurement of sides as they correspond to each other. The activity
will lead you to understand more how to solve corresponding parts of congruent
triangles.

What Is It

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

Congruent triangles – two triangles having the same angles and sides
Corresponding parts – parts that match between two congruent triangles
Corresponding angles – angles with the same measurement in the pair of similar
triangles
Corresponding sides – sides with the same measurement in the pair of similar
triangles
Congruent symbol - ≅
Example 1:

THINK OF IT!
You are holding a foldable rectangular mirror. The mirror can be
folded diagonally, and the shape became a triangle which are congruent
to each other. You labeled the rectangle mirror as DEFG. What
are the corresponding parts? If segment DE measures 8 inches and
segment DG measures 3 inches, what are the measurement of their
corresponding parts? If angle E measures 90 degrees, what are the
measurement of the corresponding angle?

Step 1: Draw and label the rectangle.

8 in.
D E
90°
3 in.

G F

14
Step 2: Identify the corresponding parts.

The two triangles formed are:

D₁ 8 in.
D₂ E
3 in.

90°

F₁
G F₂

CORRESPONDING ANGLES CORRESPONDING SIDES

Since the triangles are congruent, Since the triangles are congruent, therefore
therefore the corresponding angles the corresponding sides also have the same
also have the same measurements. measurements.
∠E ≅ ∠G
∠D₁ ≅ ∠F₂ GF₁ ≅ ED₂ D₁G ≅ F₂E
∠ D₂ ≅ ∠F₁ D₁F₁ ≅ F₂D₂

Step 3: Find the measurements.

CORRESPONDING ANGLES CORRESPONDING SIDES

Since ∠E ≅ ∠G and ∠E = 90°,
therefore, its corresponding angle Since D₁G ≅ F₂E then D₁G = 3 in., therefore
which is ∠G also measures 90°. F₂E is also equal to 3 in. since they are
congruent to each other.

D₂E ≅ F₁G ; D₂E = 8 in. so F₁G = 8 in.

If angle D₁ measures 60° and ∠F₁ measures 30°, what are the measures of their
corresponding angles?
- ∠D₁ corresponds to ∠F₂ because they are congruent, therefore the ∠F₂
measures 60°
- ∠F₁ is congruent to ∠D₂ so ∠D₂ measures 30°

ANSWERS:

CORRESPONDING SIDES CORRESPONDING ANGLES

CA ≅ PE ∠C ≅ ∠P or ∠ ACT ≅ ∠ EPW
AT ≅ EW ∠A ≅ ∠E or ∠ CAT ≅ ∠ PEW
CT ≅ PW ∠T ≅ ∠W or ∠ CTA ≅ ∠ PWE
MEASUREMENTS
1. Solving for the value of a.
-Since segment PE and segment CA are congruent to each other and
PE = 13; CA = a + 5, the solution is:

a + 5 = 13
a = 13 – 5
a=8

2. Solving for the value of b.

-Since segment PW and segment CT are congruent to each other and,
PW = b-2; CT = 7, the solution is:

b–2=7
b=7+2
b=9

3. Solving for the value of c.

-Since segment AT and segment EW are congruent to each other and,
AT = c-4; EW = 6, the solution is:

c-4 = 6
c=6+4
c = 10
