Lesson 2 Persuasive Speech

What I Need to Know

1. determine the parts of the persuasive speech; and
2. state the importance and purpose of each part of persuasive speech.

5
What’s In
Directions: Study the comic strip below and answer the questions that follow.

Questions:
1. What do the comic strips show?
2. What is the speaker trying to do to his audience?
3. Do you think the speaker is successful in conveying his message to his
audience? Why?

What’s New
A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has a goal of
convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. The speech is arranged in such a
way as to hopefully cause the audience to accept all or part of the expressed view. Though
the important goal of a persuasive speech is to convince the audience to accept a perspective,
not all audiences can be convinced by a single speech and not all perspectives can persuade
the audience. The success of a persuasive speech is often measured by the audience’s
willingness to consider the speaker’s argument.

What Is It
For a speaker to effectively convince his audience, he needs to use reasons to justify
his argument. To better understand, let us study the persuasive speech below and answer
the questions that follow.

The Morning Catch

1
Dear students, how often have you been late to school? Do you always miss the
service or any vehicle in the morning? This just passed morning, are you annoyed because
of being hurried? Did you skip your breakfasts because of the fast-running time?
2
Good afternoon class! I know most of you already know me but let me introduce for
once again myself. My name is Aaron F. San Jose, a second year Bachelor in Secondary
Education, major in Biological Science student. A lot of students and for all I know, some of
you are experiencing this kind of dilemma every morning and it might lead to your bad mood,
stress, and might even your academic performances. It is very exasperating to discern, yet
we got only one solution with that problem.
3
One of the biggest reasons why we become late is that we are lazy enough of
getting up early in the morning. True, isn’t it? In able for you to not be late, you must set
your alarm an hour or two earlier your school call time. With this step, I assure you; you will
have a long time of preparation before going to school and won’t miss a ride anymore. This
will be very helpful in avoiding morning catches.

6
4
Being late might give you bad temper and might affect your academic performance
for the reason that you will no longer participate in the class and just start your whole day
thinking you were late.
5
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it will serve as our energy
source. But if you missed it because of being late, it may harm your health and, in some
case, you will become less active in class participation.
6
Classmates, I know we really love to sleep and our bed really loves us, too! But we
should always remember our responsibilities in school most especially during the chaotic
morning weekdays. This is just a simple urging for us to keep away ourselves from being
tardy. If you follow this, instantly, you will no longer be late. Promise!
Comprehension questions:
1. What is the persuasive speech all about?
2. Which part of the persuasive speech is the introduction? body? conclusion? Write the
paragraph number for each.
3. How did you identify that the paragraph is an introduction? body? conclusion?
4. How is the topic being developed in the persuasive speech?
What are the parts of a speech?
It’s important to remember that speeches have three clear parts: an introduction, a
body and a conclusion.
The introduction establishes the topic and whets your audience’s appetite. During the
introduction, speakers attempt to impart the general and specific purpose of a speech while
making their audience members interested in the speech topic, establishing their own
credibility, and providing the audience with a preview of the speech structure. (Refer to
paragraphs 1 and 2 of the speech “The Morning Catch”)
The body of a speech is the center part that discusses the main ideas and key
concepts. It is made up of reasons, research, proofs, and evidences. (Refer to paragraphs 4
and 5)
The conclusion of speech summarizes the main points and purpose while leaving a
lasting impression on the audience. (Refer to paragraph 6)

What I Can Do
Directions: Identify the following parts of an essay and tell whether it is an
introduction, body, or conclusion.

1.
So, the next time you are wondering whether or not you should have that
second cup of coffee to perk you up, relax. At least now you know what it will – and
won’t – do for you!
2.
How many of you consider yourself caffeine addicts? How much coffee do
you drink in a day? One cup? Two cups? More? How about caffeinated sodas?
3.
Caffeine does help you wake up and feel more alert and it has been shown to
increase attention spans. This is a beneficial effect for people who are driving long
distance and for people who are doing tedious work. Calling this a health benefit may
be stretching it, though staying awake while you are driving a car definitely
contributes to your well-being!

I personally believe that libraries are among humanity’s most important institutions for
several reasons.
Firstly, most of humanity’s collective knowledge is stored in libraries. Secondly,
libraries protect and preserve this knowledge. They also classify or group the materials into
logical and easily available divisions. Furtheremore, libraries make the materials available to
everyone and even provide librarians to help us find what we need. Finallly, libraries are our
link to the past and our gift to the future.
In conclusion, libraries are important institutions for humanity.

1. What is being pointed out in the speech?

2. How many parts does the speech contain? What are they?
3. What cohesive devices can you find in the speech?

What Is It
What cohesive devices are you going to use in writing a text or speech? How do you
use them in a text or speech?
Here are some cohesive devices you can use in each part of your text or speech.
Introduction
As you begin your speech, you cannot directly start making your points, you need to ease
into it. You generally begin any speech by addressing your crowd and giving an introduction
and this can help captivate or interest your audience. You can make use of the following
phrases to introduce your topic –
Example: Today I will be discussing… The points that I will be discussing…

Cohesive devices to the first point

After you are done with the introduction, you need to move on to the first point of your

• to Numbered Points
Whenever you have a series of points you tend to number then and transition between
them as follows.
Example: First/Firstly… Second/Secondly…

9
• to show cause
Whenever you are trying to prove a point or come to a conclusion, the audience
should understand that this is what you are implying.
Example: Therefore…. Consequently…

• to an example
To make your words and thoughts more powerful, you make use of examples.
Example: For example… For instance…

Conclusion
Once you are at the end of your speech, you need to provide a brief summary or
conclusion to make sure your audience has understood the main points of your speech and
