Direct speech for :
1. Introducing yourself events.
2. Filling in for a late speaker.
3. You are asked to give a toast at a company party.
4. You get asked a question you did not prepare for while on a panel.
5. Being Interviewed
6. You get pulled into a meeting to give an update/ brief status
7. Say a goodbye speech
8. Your college refers to you in the middle of a presentation for input.
9. You are fielding questions after your own talk (QnA)
10. You are being interviewed on television, radio, webinar, or telephone.
WHAT IS IT?
Impromptu speaking is the presentation of a
message or speech without advance
preparation.

Central Problem
little or no time - the message may be
disorganized and difficult for listeners to
follow.
TECHNIQUES
• To avoid rambling in an impromptu speech,
quickly prepare a draft outline of your
speech before it’s your turn to speak.
• When delivering an impromptu speech,
consider speaking to a formula.
HOW TO DO THAT?
• Take a moment to collect your thoughts and
plan the main point you want to make.
• Thank the person for inviting you to speak.
• Deliver your message
• Thanking
• Stop talking.

international conference. Suddenly, you are
asked to introduce Indonesia. What will you
say?
Referring to basic speech structure
Opening : What we can bring in our opening
Greeting, feeling, Introduction, definition,
status or condition, general information or
thought, personal story, opinion, fact and
details, rhetorical question, give a hint for your
topic, make a specific ideas that you’re going
to explain in your body of your speech., etc.

CASE EXAMPLE : You are invited (at the last moment) to say closing words to

Feeling
Share your honest feeling about the topic, circumstance or person. If you feel
excited to be there then, that’s the impression that you remember
Anecdote / Personal Story
Share a relevant story. Most of the time, I share my first experience with the
topic. For example, if it’s a car, then I share a story about my first car in college.
If it’s a person, then I share my first experience meeting the person.
Tie Back/ Link Back
After you are done with the anecdote, make sure you tie it back to the topic
you are talking about.

the last 2 months in internship program. Their works were greatly
appreciated, and I don’t know how we would have done it without them.
Anecdote/ Personal Story
I remember your first day. You were all quiet, taking notes and probably
thinking oh my god what a mess. Then surprised us all by your initiative and
how quickly you learned. With your help, we were able to increase our
selling.

P-R-E-P Construction
Given a topic that lead you to certain side
Case : Do you think Real wealth is not measured in money
or possessions?

• Point - Start off by making a clear point about the subject


you’re speaking about
• Reason - Describe your reason for that particular point
• Example - Give a few examples to illustrate
• Point - Finish with some concluding remarks to wrap up
your story

• For me, Real wealth can be measured by how I enjoy
my life. Money and possession are also wealth, but
not the utmost things.
• I will feel rich and grateful when I enjoy my life with
lots of love and time. Drinking tea with family in the
backyard is a happy moment and I enjoy it. In
contrast, becoming billionaire and living glamorously
but having no family are nothing.
• In my perspective, real wealth is true peace of mind.

Pros, Cons, Recommendation


• Pros - Start off your speech by describing the pros first
• Cons - Describe the cons
• Recommendation - Wrap up with your recommendation

• Cannot be neglected that knowledge and skills
in digital era can be accessed through many
ways and media. People/students also can
learn with practical activities. Moreover, many
companies offers talent pool program using
training for specific purpose. Without going to
Uni, students can get the job based on their
skill specialization.
• However, to improve their careers,

recommend the government and institutions
provide comprehensive practical skills, aside
from theory. Students can learn and improved
well in University.
S-T-A-R Construction
STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result)- This method is
sometimes called the “CAR” method (Challenge, Action,
Result) This is a good communication strategy during an
interview.
• Situation - Describe the situation that you were in
• Task - Describe the task that you completed
• Action - Describe the specific actions that you took to
complete the task
• Result - Conclude by describing the result that was
achieved by taking the actions
5W1H Construction
5W – In this pattern, you could talk about :
[1] who started it, and who is involved now;
[2] what the goals are; [3] when it started, and
the schedule for the future; [4] where does it
take place; and [5] why are you involved.
Useful for when you're speaking about a
person or specific event
Timeline Construction
Case : Storytelling, Telling something in historical
pattern.
Useful for informal events such as launching
product etc.
