AROUND TO HEAR IT, DOES
IT MAKE A SOUND?

IS THE SOUND OF A FALLING
TREE LOUDER THAN THE
SOUND OF A THUNDER?

PERCEPTION is the set of process by which
we recognize, organize, and make sense of
the sensations we receive from
environmental stimuli
PERCEPTION-refers to the way we try to understand the world around us

ATTENTION

INTERPRETATION SENSATION
MENTAL PERCEPT
• Mental representation
of a stimulus that is
perceived
• WE CANNOT PERCEIVE
WHAT DOES EXIST
• WE PERCEIVE THINGS
THAT DO NOT EXIST
• This involve the
perception of visual
information not
physically present in the
visual sensory stimulus

PERCEPTUAL ILLUSION
SUGGEST THAT WHAT WE
SENSE IS NOT NECESSARILY
WHAT WE PERCEIVE
PERCEPTUAL
CONSTANCY
• Perceptual constancy
occurs when our
perception of an object
remains the same even
when our proximal
sensation of the distal
object changes
Size constancy
Perceive objects as having constant size, irrespective
of distance
Ponzo illusion
Muller- Lyer Illusion

Which is longer?
A B
Shape Constancy
• Perceive object as
unchanging
irrespective of size,
shape, brightness,
color
GESTALT APPROACH
• The Gestalt Psychology is
proved to be very useful in
understanding how we
perceive groups of objects
or parts of objects to form
integral forms
GESTALT THEORY
• Learning is explained in
terms of “wholeness” of
the problem
“THE WHOLE IS BETTER
THAN THE SUM TOTAL OF
ITS PARTS”
“THE WHOLE IS DIFFERENT
FROM THE SUM OF ITS
PARTS”
Gestalt Laws
of
Perception
1.FIGURE GROUND
- when perceiving a visual
field, some objects seem
prominent, and other
aspects of the field recede
into the background
2.PROXIMITY
- When we perceive an
assortment of objects,
we tend to see objects
that are close to each
other as forming a group
3. SIMILARITY
- We tend to group objects
on the basis of their
similarity
Similarity occurs when objects look
similar to one another. People often
perceive them as a group or pattern.

4. CONTINUITY
• Continuation occurs when the
eye is compelled to move
through one object and continue
to another object.
5. CLOSURE
-Our brains have the
tendency to finish
unfinished objects
subconsciously
• Closure occurs when an object
is incomplete or a space is not
completely enclosed. If enough
of the shape is indicated,
people perceive the whole by
filling in the missing
information.
GESTALT PRINCIPLES
APPLIED TO EDUCATION
1.SIMILARITY- closely related topics should be
taught together
2. CONTINUITY- revisiting points from the last lesson
-links between previously learnt and what they
already know
3.FIGURE GROUND- most important parts should
stand out
4.CLOSURE- lessons or topics must be made
complete
