Rationale

* Banana (Musa sapientum L.) belonging to the Musaceae family,

is the largest herbaceous flowering plant that grows in all tropical regions.

* This plant comes in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe turns
yellow, purple, and red.
It has a pseudo stem which acts as the main stem but are
actually modified leaves called bracts.

* A pseudo stem can produce a single bunch of bananas.

After fruiting, the pseudo stem dies, but offshoots may develop from
the base of the plant as suckers that are viable for reproduction.
• Micro propagation by shoot culture technique has been develop as means for
mass production of banana
• as an integral component of the ongoing eradication and rehabilitation program in
the Philippines of healthy planting materials (Panabang and Rodrigues, 2009).
• However, lack of capital outlay is one of the major impediments in the small scale
nurseries.
• In-vitro culture is a popular method of vegetative propagating crop plants with
high commercial value.
• Ideally, all plants generated from tissue culture are true to-type i.e. have identical
constitution from that of the mother or original plants.
• Contrary to this, high incidence of off-types is a major concern (Sales and Roca,
2016).
• Banana production is expensive
Rationale from planting to harvesting.
• Farmers unable to grow such crops when it comes to costs due to
plantlet price and quality.
• The banana fruit crop is widely cultivated in tropical areas where
high dosages of chemical fertilizers (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and
Potassium) are commonly applied.
• Commercial cultivation of banana requires a substantial amount of
inorganic fertilizer namely urea (Robinson, 1996).
• Banana plantlet can be grown in nursery without expending much
money.
• This can be done by using good and cheap growing medium that
are readily and locally available.
Objectives

• The study aims to determine the effect of organic potting media

utilized to tissue cultured lakatan banana grown under screen
house condition specifically it aims to:
• Determine which of the organic potting media gives the greatest
growth performance of tissue-cultured lakatan banana,
• evaluate the survival rates of tissue cultured lakatan banana and,
• assess the return on investment in the production of tissue
cultured lakatan banana using different organic potting media
grown under screen house condition.
Materials and Methods

• A study on the influenced of organic potting media utilized

tissue cultured lacatan banana grown under screenhouse
condition was conducted from January to April 2019 at the
Research Experimental Station of Caraga State University,
Ampayon, Butuan City.
• The study was conducted using Randomized Complete Block
Design (RCBD) with six (6) treatments and three (3)
replications.
Soil Medium Collection and Site Preparation
• The area was cleaned-up and prepared before transplanting of
tissue-cultured banana plantlets.
• Vermicast was collected at Organic Agriculture (OA) production
site of Caraga State University, while the sawdust was collected at
Stockhouse, Barangay Taguibo, Butuan City.
• Coco coir dust was collected at Antongalon, Butuan City.
• Collected soil medium was air dried for one week and sieved.
• One half kilogram of soil sample was filled in the pots and ready
for transplanting.

Conclusions

• As observed from the different organic potting media utilized in

the production of tissue cultured lakatan banana plantlet under
screenhouse condition it was concluded that
• T3 – Pure vermicast enhanced the greatest growth performance
of tissue cultured lacatan banana grown under screenhouse
condition both in plant height, stem diameter and number of
leaves.
* On the survival rate T4 – VC + CCD + SD (1:1:1) enhanced
the highest survival rate of tissue cultured lakatan banana
grown under screen house condition of 83.3%.
* While Treatment 2 - Coco coir dust enhanced the greatest
return on investment with a rate of 152.44%.
