2. Constant mesh type
3. Synchromesh type
i. Three speed gearbox
ii. Four speed gearbox
iii. Six speed gearbox

B. Planetary gear transmission

1. Epicyclic gear type
2. Automatic transmission
C. Twin top type gearbox
D. Pre-selective gearbox
SLIDING MESH GEARBOX
Disadvantages of sliding mesh gearbox

Although the mechanical efficiency of the sliding mesh

gearbox was high, it suffered from two great disadvantages:

 Gear noise due to the type of gear.

 The difficulty of obtaining a smooth, quit and quick change

of gear without the great skill and judgment.
CONSTANT MESH GEARBOX
Advantages of constant mesh gearbox

 As gears have to remain in constant mesh it is not

necessary to use straight spur gears. Instead helical gears
are used which are quieter in running.

 Wear of dog on account of engaging and disengaging is

reduced.

 Due to use of helical gear, instead of having the load on

only one pair of teeth, it is distributed over more than one
pair of teeth.
Disadvantages of constant mesh gearbox

 Problem of double declutching.

SYNCHRO-MESH GEARBOX
Advantages of synchromesh gearbox

 Smooth, quit and quick change of gear.

 Less wear and tear.

EPICYCLIC GEARBOX
Advantages of Epicyclic gearbox

 The gears are always inn constant mesh.

 A wide variation in gear ratio can be obtained.

 Engagement of gear ratio can be obtained.

 It is compact unit.

 Instead of having the loan on only pair of gear, it is

distributed over several gears.
