1987 CONSTITUTION

AFTER MATIAL LAW

President Corazon Aquino’s
government had three (3)
options regarding the
constitution:
1. Revert to the 1935
constitution
2.Retain the 1973 constitution
3.Be granted the power to make
reforms, or start a new and
break from the “vestiges of a
disgraced dictatorship.”
The Aquino’s government
decided to make a new
constitution that should be
“truly reflective of the
aspiration and ideals of the
Filipino people.”
In 1986, a constitutional
convention
was created, composed of 48
members appointed by
President Aquino from varied
backgrounds and and
presentation.
The convention drew up a
permanent constitution, largely
restoring the setup abolished by
Marcos in 1972, but with new
ways to keep the president in
check, a new reaction to the
experience of Marco’s rule.
The new constitution was
officially adopted on february
2, 1987
The constitution begins
with a preamble and
eighteen (18) self-
contained articles.
It established the Philippines
as a “Democratic Republican
State” where “sovereignity
resides in the people of all
government authority
emantes from them.
IT ALLOCATES
GOVERNMENTAL POWERS
AMONG EXECUTIVE,
LEGISLATIVE, AND
JUDICIARY.
