Caselet
For last few nights, Michael has failed to sleep properly. He is in a dilemma. Past few months have
been very exhausting. Setting up the new office in Silicon valley, US was always a dream. But,
choosing the person to head it is giving him sleepless nights. He was always confident that John
would be the natural choice for their expansion plans abroad. But, the concerns raised by board
regarding John’s attitude to manage the foreign expansion has put him in a fix.
John is brilliant, an IIT-IIM alumnus with 14 years of experience, out of which 8 years in multiple
foreign locations makes him an ideal choice. When he joined 3 years back, Miracle Software was
struggling, it was he, who singlehandedly made it a 100 Million USD.
But in last few months, he has expressed overt displeasure over few issues. He complains how the
board (comprising of some senior members) lacks vision to take Miracle to the next level. He even
came to Michael for support to buy a Scottish startup which would have given Miracle a foothold in
Europe. According to him, US (under Trump’s leadership) won’t be the right choice to start their
foreign expansion. Last week, in a cocktail party, he openly announced that it’s time to start his own
company. Although the next day, when asked about it, he laughed it out.

Michael still believes John is the most competent person to manage their US office , but is he the
right one ?
