The primary purpose of the speech was to inform the audience about Ms
Postrel’s newest book, The Substance of Style, which examines commercial
capitalism, focusing on the apparent need for aesthetic value in modern
American items such as designer clothing and gourmet food. In the book, the
author argues that this concern with aesthetics is more significant than many
people realize, and is in fact necessary to fuel creativity, inspire development,
and enhance emotional comfort (New York Times, 2003).
 February 1, 2004
 . She describes the different kinds of glamour and
what goes on behind-the-scenes to achieve this. She
also defines the changing meaning of this word.

How the Rise of

Aesthetic Value Is
Remaking Commerce,
Culture, and
Consciousness
where she describes the growing
conflict in post-Cold War society
between "dynamism" — marked by
constant change, creativity and
exploration in the pursuit of
progress — and "stasism", where
that progress is marked by careful
and cautious planning. Postrel
endorses the former, illustrates the
differences between the two sides,
and argues that dynamism should
be embraced rather than feared.
