DEFINITION
Prosedur text is a text that explain or help us on how to make something/use something /operate
something. The word Prosedure itself means the stages to complete an activity. So, the
definition of Prosedure text is a type if text that certain final goal. Usually, this text begins with
a sentence "how to..." for the main title. For example "how to operate a computer" or "how to
make chicken soup"

Then how we distinguish or analyze a text whether it is a Prosedure text or not? Prosedure text
is easy to identify, because it contains an explanation of how, guidelines, steps, tips, or tricks.
The form of Prosedure text can be in the rule books, user guides, digital tutorials and various
kinds of the like.

SOCIAL FUNCTION
In general, the social functions of the text are

 To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of


actions or steps.
 To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something
But the social functions of the prosedur text can also divided into 3 part.

1. Manual: to provide a series of precise, sequenced steps or directions that explain to the
readers how to do something while also allowing the readers to reach the outcome

2. Recipe: to describe how food is completely made or cooked through a sequence of
series/actions or steps. How to make meatball
3. Itinerary: to make a well-prepared program or travel, to make an effective journey or
travel, and to be a guideline in spending time during travelling. Travel to Jakarta, travel
to Thailand

GENERIC STRUCTURE
1. Goal
This text contains about purpose of making or operating of something. This part usually
found in the title of the text For example: how to make a lemon tea, how to operate a
computer, how to do a daily make up, etc
2. Materials
Materials consist of ingredients that are used or need in making something. But not all
parts of procedure text includes materials, sometimes a procedure text does not have
materials section.
3. Steps/Methods
Contains the steps or sequences that must be done so that the objectives outlined in the
goal to be achieved. Steps or sequences must be a sequence from the first to the last.

LANGUAGE FEATURE
- Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the
last)
- Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . .,
wash the tomatoes. . . )
- Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for
example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
- Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook
- Using Simple Present Tense
Simple Present Tense is a verb tense with two main uses. We use simple present tense when
an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly or unceasingly, which is why
it’s sometimes called present indefinite. Depending on the person, the simple present tense is
formed by using the root form or by adding -s or -es to the end.

Purpose of the simple present tense is to show about the daily activities and general truth and
to show time table as well such as (describe habits, unchanging situations, giving instructions
or directions, and fixed agreements).

Simple present tense is used:

- To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions


and wishes:
I smoke (habit); I work in London (unchanging situation); London is a large city
(general truth)
- To give instructions or directions:
You walk for two hundred meters, then you turn left.
- To express fixed arrangements, present or future:
Your exam starts at 09.00
- To express future time, after some conjunctions: after, when, before, as soon as, until:
He'll give it to you when you come next Saturday.

Examples

 For habits
He drinks tea at breakfast.
She only eats fish.
They watch television regularly.
- For repeated actions or events
We catch the bus every morning.
It rains every afternoon in the hot season.
They drive to Monaco every summer.
 For general truths
Water freezes at zero degrees.
The Earth revolves around the Sun.
Her mother is Peruvian.
 For instructions or directions
Open the packet and pour the contents into hot water.
You take the No.6 bus to Watney and then the No.10 to Bedford.
 For fixed arrangements
His mother arrives tomorrow.
Our holiday starts on the 26th March
With future constructions
She'll see you before she leaves.
We'll give it to her when she arrives.

There are 2 form of simple present tense:

1. Nominal sentence
patern:
(+) S + be (am, are, is) + O
(-) S + be (am, are, is) + not + O
(?) be (am, are, is) + S + O + ?
example:
(+) Dinda is a student
(-) Dinda is not a student
(?) Is Dinda a student?
2. Verbal Sentence
patern:
(+) S + V1/V1(s/es)
(-) S + do/does + not + V1
(?) do/does + S + V1 + O
example:
(+) She drinks water everyday
(-) She does not drink water
(?) Does drink water everyday?
EXEMPLE OF PEOSEDURE TEXT
HOW TO MAKE NASI GORENG “FRIED RICE”

Nasi goreng, "fried rice" is a familiar food from Indonesia; if you want to know how to prepare
nasi goreng this is the procedure how to make nasi goreng. Just follow this

explanation :

Ingredients:

- 350 gr. Long Grain Rice


- 2 Tbs. Vegetable Oil
- 3 Eggs
- 1 Onion
- 2 Green Chillis, Sambal Ulek or Sambal Badjak.
- 1 Garlic Clove
- 1 Leek
- 1 teaspoon Ground Coriander
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
- 250 gr. Chicken meat
- 250 gr. Shelled Prawns
- 3 Tbs. Kecap Manis

Steps:

This dish is best made from cold leftover rice, but you can cook a fresh batch and leave it to
cool for at least 4 hours. Beat the eggs and make into a omelette, slice into strips and set aside.
Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan. Add the chopped onion, leek, garlic and chillis. Fry
until the onion is soft. Add the Coriander and Cumin. Slice Chicken into strips and add with
the prawns to the onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally until they are well mixed. Add
the rice, soya sauce and omelet strips and cook for a further 5 minutes.Decorate with some of
the leftover leek and serve hot. Enjoy.
