A. Definition of Procedure Text

Procedure text is text that contains orders or instructions on how, methods or tips to make, use

something that can be in the form of goods or other things with stages carried out

chronologically or sequentially.

An example of a common form of procedure text is a food recipe that has the purpose of getting

people to do the same thing by giving a consecutive cooking sequence.

B. Purpose of Procedure Text

In general procedure text has two functions, namely:

 1. Tells how something can be made or used with step-by-step instructions. For example,

like a food recipe.

2. Give instructions on the ways / steps / methods to create, operate or do something. For

example, it is like the procedure for how to turn on the air conditioner.

Generic Structure Procedure Text

As with other texts, below is a generic structure of procedure text.

1. Goal or aim contains the purpose of the activity or thing to be done or made.

2. Materials or tools, this section mentions the materials or tools needed to make an item /

do something. In procedure text, materials are optional or not always present.

3. Steps, which is a series of steps, methods, methods or tips to do something in sequence.

4. Conclusion / result, this section contains the final results of what has been done in

accordance with the steps taken.

C. Characteristics of Procedure Text

1. Using the simple present tense (V1), in other words, the verb used is in the form V1.

For example make, cut.

2. Using imperative, which is a verb in the form of an order. For example, stir the soup, fry

the fish.

3. Using action verbs, which are verbs that indicate physical activity, such as flip, cover,

uncover.

4. Using order or sequence, which is a conjunction that connects steps to one another. For

example, then, next, after, while, that, hence, to begin with, last of all, as soon as, in the

end, gradually.

5. Using the temporal conjunction, for example first, then, next, after that, last.
D. Example Procedure Text

How to Make Tomato Soup

To make a bowl of tomato soup, you must prepare all ingredients below:
 4 large tomatoes
 spices
 1 small onion
 1/2 teaspoon of salt
 8 cups of water
 1/4 teaspoon of pepper small clove garlic
 1/4 teaspoon of butter

Here are the steps to make a bowl of tomato soup:

1. Cut tomatoes, onions, and garlic into small pieces.
2. Fry them in a pan with butter for five minutes.
3. Add water, spices, salt and pepper.
4. Heat until the water boils.
5. Turn down the heat and cover with lid. Cook gently for one hour.

Please read the following text carefully.

HOW TO USE A WASHING MACHINE

Materials:
1. A unit of washing machine
2. Detergent
3. Water
Steps:
 First, separate your clothing. It means, you have to separate your clothing into three
categories, whites, dark, and bright colors.
 Second, separate the dry cleaning only or hand wash only items into a new pile.
 Third, put the correct measure of detergent into the machine.
 Next, add the water and wait until it’s full enough.
 After that, close the lid and set the speed of your machine or you can choose regular
speed for most clothing. To get the best result, use hot water for while clothing, cold for
dark clothes, and warm for bright colors.
 Then, turn on the washing machine and allow it to run until it’s finished.
 After the process of washing has finished, let the clothes drain through the drain hose.
 After that, see the knob of the wash timer again. Set up for three minutes more. Do this
twice for a good rinsing.
 Finally, put the wet clothes into the spin compartment, set the knob and wait until the
spin processing shuts off.

Rani : Hi mom, are you busy?

Mother: Not at all. What can I do for you?
Rani : Well, I will visit Bunga at her house after lunch. I will make a surprise for her.
Mother: Wow! That’s good. So, tell me what can I do for you?
Rani : I want to make Banana Cake but can’t make it by myself. Would you like to help me?
Mother: Yes, let’s go to the kitchen. The ingredients are 200 gr flour, 1 tsp baking soda and 1 tsp
baking powder, 100 gr sugar, 6 bananas. Let’s go to the next step. Make the Banana smooth and
fine.
Rani : Alright. Let me do it.
Mother: Okay. Here you go. Let me see. Firstly to make the dry ingredients, mix 200 gr flour, 1
tsp baking soda and 1 tsp baking powder while sieved in a bowl. Add 100 gr sugars, stir well,
and set aside.
Rani : Got it! I’ll handle that.
Mother: That’s good. The next step, in another bowl, mixes the wet dough consisting of
sweetened condensed milk, vegetable oil, water and eggs. Stir with a fork or whisk until
frothy. Stir well, and then add the banana that has been crushed before.
Next, put in the dry ingredients into the wet dough, stir with spatula until smooth. Pour in a pan
that has smeared with butter and sprinkling of flour.
Rani : Alright I see. Please do it for me, and what is the next step?
Mother: Then bake for 40 minutes. If the dough turns to brown, raise it, remove it from the pan,
cut it into pieces, and finally serve it!
Rani : Alright. I’ll turn on the oven.
