Definition
Procedure is a text that shows a process in order. Its
social function is to describe how something is completely
done through a sequence of series. (Prosedur adalah teks
yang menunjukkan suatu proses secara urut. Fungsi
sosialnya adalah untuk menggambarkan bagaimana
sesuatu benar-benar dilakukan melalui runtutan langkah.)
Generic Structure of Procedure Text
# Goal : It is containt the purpose of the text. (e.g : How to
make spagheti)
# Material or Ingredient : it is containt of the materials that
used in the process. (e.g : the material to cook omelette
are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc. )
# Step : it is containt of the steps to make something in the
goal. (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut
the onions becomes slice. . . )
Heat oil in a deep fryer until moderately hot. Place coated plantain or banana in the
wok or deep fryer and fry slowly until golden brown and crispy. This usually takes
approximately 10-15 minutes. Remove bananas from oil, drain on paper napkins
and dry well. (Panaskan minyak dalam penggorengan sampai cukup panas.

Characteristics of Procedure Text, and Examples
A. Definition
1 . Text that explain how something works or how to use instruction/operation manuals e.g. how to
use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
2 . Text that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science
experiments, road safety rules.
3. Text that deal with human behavior, e.g. how to live happily, how to succeed.
B. Generic Structure

2. Materials/Equipment
Materials consist of ingredients that are used in making something. But not all parts of procedure text
includes materials, sometimes a procedure text does not have materials section.
3. Steps/Methods
Contains the steps or sequences that must be done so that the objectives outlined in the aim/goal to be
achieved. Steps or sequences must be a sequence from the first to the last.
C. Purpose
The purpose of procedure text is to tell the reader how to do or make something. The information is
presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small sequenced steps. These texts are
usually written in the present tense. The most common example of a procedural text is a recipe.
ü Using imperative sentence patters (Command), for example, Cut, Do not mix, and so on.
ü Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five
minutes, 2 hours, etc.
Materials :
· An empty plastic bottle of mineral water
· A sharp cutter
· Some points
· Some glue
Steps :
1. Wash the plastic bottle. Make sure it is clean when you use it.
Ingredients
Main ingredients:
· For type Kapal selam, you need 3 hard-boiled eggs slice half

Sewing:
1 . Blend all the ingredients into food processor until the smooth like a daugh, you could put splash
of water if you need it.
2 . Put enough fish cake into your hand and put half boiled egg in the middle and cover it with the
dough and put into boiled water until floating
3. Drain all the water, deep fry it and add some of the soup.
